The Bone Garden

“I don’t like this,” she said.

“Well, it’s just Jacob and he didn’t do anything to me so don’t start fussing.” I pulled up the dark blue jeans and was pleased that I pulled out a plain dark blue t-shirt to match. Lastly, I put on a pair of black boots because I wasn’t about to dirty my nice shoes out in that ghastly weather.

“Still, I have a bad feeling about you going off with him. You just met him this morning.”

“Don’t hash this up for me, Violet.” I looked up at her and was taken aback by the look on her face. I had never really done something like this, except when I went over to that boy’s grandmother’s house. But Violet looked terribly worried and I couldn’t help but feel awful about leaving now.

“Whatever,” she finally said, and stalked off down the hallway. I wanted to go after her but it wouldn’t do her any good. So I got up from my bed and fixed my hair better in the mirror before I hurried out of my room and off with the boy in blue.

  . . .

Jacob slammed me against the shed in our back lawn and we made out wildly, both of his big hands gliding down my back and to my arse cheeks, squeezing them for dear life. My entire body was burning hot and trembling and I wanted to rip his shirt clean from his chest.

We had walked around my side of town for a couple of hours, talking about being gay and somewhat closeted. He had a difficult life with an alcoholic father, and his mum was a prostitute. On our way back to my house, he kissed me on the lips. I took him by the hand, and we snuck along the gigantic hedges blocking off the neighbors’ yard and ended up behind the huge shed in my back lawn.

I felt his hand nearing my genitals and I moved it away. He took his mouth off of mine and looked me in the eyes. He tasted like spearmint gum. His lips were red from me sucking on them and his cheeks were flushed.

  “Is something wrong?” he asked.

“No. I just don’t like being touched there,” I said. And I didn’t like it. Nothing traumatic occurred for me to feel this way, I just liked being the one who “took it up the arse with no reciprocation,” or so they say.

“Oh. You’re that type. Awesome.” He smiled and we went back to kissing. “Do you wanna do it?” he asked between kisses, and I said no because we were outside in the daylight and he laughed and agreed. But to make it all better, I let go of his lips and guided him, pressing his back against the shed. He seemed to not know what I was getting at so I began undoing his jeans, and when I pulled them down to his ankles he smiled and said, “Can I marry you now?”

I was nervous and my hands felt ice cold. When I pulled down his boxer-briefs I knew he felt the coolness of my hands because he trembled a bit. His thighs were hairy with gold blond and I couldn’t help but think it was cute. And then I looked at his penis and my mouth nearly hit the grass. It was huge.

My first time, that boy’s dick wasn’t that big. In fact, mine was even bigger than his. But Jacob’s was so large I had to swallow hard and contemplate how I was going to wrap my lips around it.

  “Is everything cool?” he said.

  “Yeah, it is just… you’re so… big,” I replied.

“Yeah, I know,” he said arrogantly.

“Cocky, now aren’t we?” I said.

“Well, I’m not the one on my knees,” he snickered, and I swatted him on the thigh. I didn’t want him to become uninterested so I rubbed my hands on my thighs, making them as warm as possible, before I grabbed his dick and slipped it as far as I could into my mouth.

I was sucking him for a while before he said he was going to cum. I told him to cum inside my mouth and instantly regretted it when my mouth was full of hot, disgusting, semen. I chucked it on the grass before he could see and smiled up at him. He looked as if he were about to pass out. I hadn’t let that first boy cum in my mouth because I was only giving him head for a few minutes before he turned me over on the bed and shoved it up my arse.

I wanted to experience what I had seen in some gay porn and now I knew I didn’t ever want to do it again.

“That was fucking amazing,” Jacob said as he pulled up his jeans.

“Has anyone ever done that to you?” I asked him as I dusted my knees off and looked at him. I had done something. He instantly looked hurt. “Are you okay?”

“I… yeah, a girl did it once.” He cleared his throat. But there was something else bugging him.

“Tell me what is wrong or I’ll keep nagging you,” I said. He looked at me and ran his hand through his hair, letting the long pieces fall over his eyes.

“I did it once to someone. You know that house we went to earlier?” My smile faded. We both hadn’t mentioned the house and what had happened the whole time we were together, and now it felt weird.

“Yeah,” I said like it was nothing.

“Kevin brought me there when I first started hanging with his group. He… he made me suck him off down in the cellar and then beat the shit out of me afterward. He said it was my initiation to his group.”

I didn’t know what to say. It was as if my tongue was in a knot and all I could do was open my mouth. He looked up from the ground and we locked eyes.

“He killed someone when he was a kid. He bashed his head in with a shovel and got away with it. He told me he’d bash my head in if I didn’t suck him.”

“I’m sorry he did that to you, Jacob.” I walked up to him and took his hand into mine. He looked at me with sadness and then looked down. I just wanted to take him into my arms and never let him go.

  “I’m sorry, too.”

I looked up into his eyes.

  “Sorry for what?” I asked.

“This,” a voice stated from behind me. Something black and itchy was tossed over my head and all I could see was darkness.

  . . .

Voices aroused me. I came to with my eyes soggy and my vision warped. I let my eyes adjust and saw that I was in a dim lit room with a clamp light dangling above me and two figures standing in the distance. It was cold and smelt of earth and something dead.

“He’s waking up,” a voice said, and I recognized it as Jacob’s.

“You can scream all you want, but no one will hear your ass,” Kevin’s voice slithered into my ear.

“What’s going on?” I said in a croaky voice. I was tied to a chair, I assumed, and my hands were bound behind me, my wrists aching.

“Did you really think I was gay?” Jacob said, and he punched me in the stomach. I went into a fit of coughs and started crying. I had never felt so much physical pain.

“Faggot,” Kevin said. He slugged me in the face, but his hand slipped and he barely caught the tip of my nose. Why were they doing this to me? How could this even be happening? I felt like one of my mum’s victims tied to a chair, suffering. Now I was angry and my entire face was on fire.

  “You stupid motherfuckers.” I laughed.

“What? What the hell are you laughing at?” Kevin glared at me from beneath his hooded brow. He looked extra evil in the light from above. Everything else around him was pitch black. It was like I was a part of some sick interrogation.

I kept laughing because once mum, Violet, and Darwin found out what had happened, whether they beat me up or murdered me, these boys would pay for it greatly.

“I told you, you don’t know my family. You’re in for a rude awakening, you both.” This time, Kevin was aiming correctly and his fist hit my cheek and it stung. I fixed my jaw and looked up at Jacob.

“Did you not enjoy me sucking you off?” I asked.

“Shut the fuck up,” he growled. “That wasn’t my choice.”

“He’s right. I made him do it so you would trust him,” Kevin said.

“So you’re the gay one then?” I moved my head to Kevin. His eyes lit up with anger and he came at me, but stopped halfway.

“I’m no fag,” he spit, and his saliva landed on my thigh.

“You stupid motherfucking twat!” I growled with so much fury, they both took a few steps back. There was nothing more I hated
than disgusting things like that, and to top it off, it got on my expensive jeans.

“Time for some fun,” Kevin said, and he picked up a kitchen knife from a table. He switched on a desk lamp and I saw that there was an array of knives and even a stun gun.

My anger rushed off and was replaced with panic. I didn’t want to die. I didn’t want to leave Violet alone. She needed me. And she had been right. Something bad was going to happen and it was me that was going to experience it. This is what it must feel like before my mum slits someone’s throat or stabs someone to death. This is the fear her victims must feel.

“You’re a crazy fag,” Kevin laughed. “And you’re dying tonight, bitch.”

“Quite the contrary, actually.” Another voice arose from the darkness, and before they could react, Kevin and Jacob fell forward and met the concrete floor, screaming. They both began to crawl forward into the light, their eyes wet with tears and their faces tomato red. I looked down at them and smiled. Someone had slit both of their ankles in half and blood was pooling in tiny crimson puddles.

“I told you, didn’t I? You don’t know my family,” I said, and into the light came Violet with her favorite instrument in hand, an extremely sharp hatchet that Darwin had given to her after her first kill when she was eleven.

Violet smiled like a kid on their birthday that had plenty of gifts to open and lifted the hatchet above her head. Her hair had fallen over her face but her smile was visible.

“Nobody fucks with my brother but me,” she snapped, and swung the hatchet down into Kevin’s back. He arched his body upward and his mouth hung open in a silent scream. Jacob began screaming so Violet yanked the hatchet free from Kevin and buried it into Jacob’s head. It cracked open like a watermelon and he started shaking, urine and blood corroding the floor.

  “Please,” Kevin managed to say.

“How polite,” Violet said. “He said ‘please’. Of course you may have another.” With that, she buried the hatchet five times into his body and spurts of blood got on my jeans. Damn it. Now I was going to have to throw them out.

Violet moved her hair out of her face and accidentally smeared blood on her forehead. She liked to admire her work, like Darwin.

“Don’t just stand there, untie me!” I snapped.

“You didn’t listen to me, you fuckwit. Will you listen from now on?” She sat the hatchet on the table and crossed her arms.

“Yes. Now untie me before my bloody hands fall off.”

“That’s a good Perry,” Violet said, and came over to set me free.

It took me a few minutes, sitting in the chair, to let everything sink in. I had never killed anyone before, but I had seen so much death that it didn’t affect me like it should. But what Violet did in front of me made me somewhat sick to my stomach, and I couldn’t let her see that. She didn’t know mum had lied when she said I killed that old woman in the basement two years ago. Mum said I’d do it when I was ready. But after seeing Violet murder two teenage boys, I didn’t think I’d ever be ready now. I was trembling on the inside and felt bad for some reason.

And not to mention Violet had broken an extremely important rule. We weren’t allowed to kill anyone in town because it was a sure way of getting caught. Mum was going to be angry beyond belief but Darwin would somehow clean this up. It was sort of his job.

Violet dug her hand into Jacob’s pocket and pulled out a pack of gum.

“I like his taste in gum,” Violet said and slipped a piece into her mouth and smiled at me. I smiled back because it was the thing to do. If I showed I was somehow not okay with what had just happened, she’d go tell mum and would make it ten times worse.

“Let’s go before I get sick,” I said, and I stepped over Kevin and to Violet.

We left the cellar and headed home. We decided to tell Darwin I had gotten into a quarrel with some boys and Violet had followed me because she had been worried and knocked them off before they could hurt me. Darwin probably wouldn’t believe us, but he’d help anyway and we’d tell our mum the same tale.

  . . .

Violet walked away toward the bathroom as I turned into my bedroom. I leaned back out and knocked once on the wall. She turned and stared at me.

“Thank you, little sister,” I said.

“Eat a dick, Perry,” she replied and closed the bathroom door behind her.

The next morning, I went outside with my coffee and stared up at the still gloomy sky. Darwin had fixed up Kevin and Jacob to make it look like some sick pervert murdered them. He even left their bodies on the steps of the high school where they were sure to be found. And they were found, very quickly.

The news was on fire with the story of two young teens that had been found brutally murdered and somehow raped. I got the chills while watching the annoying anchor woman talk about it. But Violet was ecstatic.

“How did you get more bones?” I asked Violet as she patted the earth around one large one. It looked too different from the other ones, so I sat my mug on the top stair and headed down to her. I studied the bone and looked at my sister with wide eyes.

“Is that a human bone?” I asked.

“Yes. I found it in the cellar when me and Darwin went back to clean up. There were at least, if counted correctly, four bodies down there, all bones though.” She kept patting.

“It was Kevin,” I said, recalling what Jacob had said. He hadn’t been lying about Kevin killing, but it was more than that one kid he had taken care of when he was younger.

Goosebumps appeared on my arms and the wind tickled my ankles. Now, realizing what Kevin had done, I didn’t feel sorry for him anymore. But Jacob I couldn’t help feeling sorry for, he was probably just tied up in Kevin’s web and was too scared to get out.

“I killed a killer,” Violet said.

“Yes, you did,” I replied. “But what if someone sees that bone, it’s quite obvious.”

  “I’ll say it’s fake.”

“Well it’s a nice, murky day for some peculiar gardening,” I said and turned to grab my coffee.

“Perry?” Violet stopped patting and turned to me.

  “Yes?”

  “You’re welcome,” she said.

I smiled at her, took a sip from my coffee, and rolled up my housecoat sleeves.

“Want some help?” I asked, and her entire face lit up. She nodded and I rolled up my pants above my knees and let them hit the grass with a faint splat.

I dug a hole with the little green shovel Violet handed me and picked up a small cat bone and placed it into the hole, making sure it stood like the rest. Satisfied, I smiled at my sister and she laughed.

“Looks like we’ve both gone mad now, haven’t we?”
