  “Come on, Mommy!” he shouted.

Casey was still laughing. “They’re getting away!”

Susan chased after them up the stairs, laughing and crying and screaming, finally knowing without a doubt that everything was going to turn out okay.

  ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Writing a book is such a solitary thing, but so many people contribute to the finished product, and I’m grateful for each and every one of them.

To my agent, Curtis Russell of PS Literary Agency. Thank you for continuing to be my biggest advocate out there in the publishing world. You always shoot me straight and guide me as we build this brand together. You’re always the first person to see my work, and your feedback continues to be incredibly important. I appreciate everything you do for me.

To my editors, Megha Parekh and Caitlin Alexander. This one was a bit of a struggle, and your feedback and suggestions were instrumental in getting me to shape this book the right way and to finally find the heartbeat of the story I was looking for. I think readers will really love what we’ve created here. Thank you.

To Sarah Shaw, Ashley Vanicek, and the rest of the Thomas & Mercer team. Your enthusiasm for my work means so much. Thank you for everything you do out in the marketplace to make sure my books get into the hands of the readers.

Special shout-out to the line editors and copyeditors who keep things in order so the story is one cohesive (and readable) thing. What you do is special, and I’m truly thankful for your help and suggestions.

To Crystal Patriarche and the BookSparks team. Thank you for helping spread the word about my books to the farthest reaches of the book-reading community. I love all the new and creative ideas you’ve come up with to let readers know about me and my work. Couldn’t do this without you guys.

To Investigator Brian Martin of the New York State Police, Manhattan. This is the second book you’ve helped me on. Thank you for your insight on the inner workings of the state police and for responding to strange texts that come out of nowhere about murder, protocols, and random procedural questions. If I got anything wrong, that’s on me.

To my family and friends, who continue to support me. I love you all and thank you from the bottom of my heart.

To my wife, Cathy. This wild journey keeps chugging along, and I’m so glad you’re by my side to share it with me. I love you.

To my two daughters, Mackenzie and Jillian. As I stated in my previous book, you two are the inspiration behind everything that’s good, pure, loving, and strong about Susan Adler. When I tell her story, I see you two in my mind. I love you.

Finally, a huge thank-you to my readers. Your ongoing support and willingness to spread the word about my books is so inspiring. I’m forever grateful that out of all the novels you can buy and read, you choose mine. I hope you continue to enjoy my stories and share your reading experiences with me. I write for you, and as I always say, thank you for reading.
