Distant Lover Page 36

by Gloria Mallette

  4. Most women have best girlfriends—they need each other to pour their hearts out to, to gossip with, to share their ups and downs with, to shop with. Evonne was Tandi’s best friend. Did Evonne betray the friendship way before she slept with Tandi’s husband, Jared, when she began to envy what Tandi had? Are there ever signs that a friend can and will betray the friendship? Do women tell their girlfriends too much about their relationships with their significant others?

  5. Tandi was willing to continue trusting Evonne even after Evonne betrayed her, yet she was unwilling to trust her husband, Jared, after he had an affair on her the first time. Why is that?

  6. Tandi most definitely had issues with her father, Sporty, for never showing her love, and for always appearing to be angry with her. Could Tandi’s lack of love from her father, and loss of her mother at such a young age, affect her relationship with her brother, Glynn; her husband, Jared; and her father himself now that he’s older and needs to depend on her?

  7. Sporty was a bitter, crotchety old man. He never spoke about his past and lied to Glynn and Tandi about the mother they never got to know. Once Mr. Belson’s past was revealed, was his bitterness understood and/or justified? Was he wrong to keep the past secret from Glynn and Tandi? Could revealing the past earlier have made a difference in the hostile relationship Tandi and her father shared?

  8. It could be argued that Tandi was fated to return to her father’s house, as it was only in his house that the truth about the past could possibly be revealed. In returning home, although she protested, was Tandi subconsciously hoping to get closer to her father?

  9. Tandi’s long lost mother, Carlene, couldn’t face what her intimate relationship with her cousin did to her family. She turned to drugs to numb her pain, and eventually deserted Sporty, Glynn and Tandi. Is the stigma of marrying a cousin just as strong today as it was in the past? Once Glynn was born to Carlene and Sporty, despite their familial connection should they have stayed together to face the world as a couple? Could they have stayed together and never exposed themselves? Will they stay together now?

  10. Now that Tandi knows the truth about her parentage, do you think she’ll ever see her father, Sporty, in a different light? Do you think she’ll ever get over her anger with him? Will she ever be able to open her heart to him?
