“What sort of program?” Mackenzie asked.
“We can’t tell you that,” McGrath said. “Not while you’re in the Academy.”
She nodded, confused beyond measure but too afraid to question anything.
“You did some damn fine work,” McGrath said. “It was reckless and unnecessarily life-threatening, but you got the job done. You did it on your own and without a firearm. It’s one of those stories that would live in infamy. But…as we said before I re-tasked you to the assignment, you can’t get the credit. Officially, you weren’t even there.”
She nodded, understanding, and not even caring about the credit. All she cared about was that she saved that girl’s life. She could still see her grateful look, remember their shared cry, and that was enough.
“Although,” Bryers said, “the true story somehow got out among your peers.”
“So,” McGrath said, getting to his feet, “think it over. Devote yourself to these last few weeks at the Academy and then get in touch with me. This special position is yours if you want it.”
With that, McGrath headed back to the door and opened it. He gave a wave and left as if he had been paying a random visit to discuss the weather. Ellington approached her and gave her an awkward hug before he left. Bryers followed behind him and as he reached the doorway, he turned back to her.
“I’m proud of you, White. Damn fine job.”
Bryers grinned at her and then closed the door, leaving Mackenzie alone yet again.
And for the first time since leaving Nebraska, she felt good.
