Somebody Worth It Page 18

by Nickie Nalley Seidler

“We started screaming, but I don’t know who sounded more girly!” I rolled my eyes in his direction, punching him in the shoulder. “You did Dean! You sounded like a pack of fifteen-year-old girls when NSync walks past!”

He pushed my shoulder. “Um no. It was you! I was manning up to protect you when you ran away.”

“Manning up? Dude, you were fifteen feet in front of me and running like the hounds of hell were on your heels!”

Dean hung his head and looked at me from under his lashes with the mischievous smile I loved so much on his lips. “Yeah, I guess I totally blew that one, huh? But, there were a lot of them, they were fast, and they had stingers and—and.” He blushed, trying to be cute.

“Dean, sweetheart, slow your roll! They were bees not tracker jackers or some shit like that. Just admit it, you were a girly girl.”

He leaned halfway across the picnic basket, and I met him there just so I could press my lips to his and feel that passion we had for one another. The tension was thickening, but it was nice. It was nice to feel wanted, nice to feel the love and not have to question why he was doing the things he was doing.

After a long day at the park, Dean had to head out because he had his interview this evening and dinner with the team. I was excited for him, but not so excited we were leaving this amazing place. I was happy I could say I’d been here once, and it was with a pretty special guy.

Something I ate wasn’t sitting right with me. We had to make several stops on the way back to the hotel, and I was getting frustrated. As much as I wanted to be there with Dean for the interviews and dinner, I didn’t think I felt well enough to go. I didn’t want to embarrass anyone with my bathroom trips, or my loud stomach rumbles. I really wanted to go, it was making me super upset. There were things I wanted to discuss and things I wanted to see him accomplish tonight. I wanted to know how it all went down. How he did his job the best. I wanted to meet the team. Unfortunately, I didn’t think that was happening. Dean got me back to the hotel and tucked me in the bed.

“You’re not going,” he whispered while fluffing the pillow behind me.

“Dean, I came here with you to do this,” I whined.

“We stopped ten times for you to use the restroom. You caught a little stomach bug. You need to stay here, drink the Gatorade I bought you, and eat the crackers. I will bring you some dinner back and see if you can down it then. No ifs, ands, or buts you’re staying here.”

I poked my lip out and pouted, and he quickly closed my mouth was his thumb.

“Stop, it’s not that big of a deal. You’ll get to see plenty more interviews. I promise. I want you better to be able to enjoy the rest of the trip.” We had all day tomorrow to relax before we left Friday. My idea was the pool and releasing some tension, but I would have to be feeling better to do that tomorrow, too.

“Okay. Take a picture and send it to me, so I can feel loved and like I was there.” I giggled.

“I will, take it easy, okay?” He smiled.

Dean got all dressed up and decided to head out to make sure he made it to the event on time. After going to the bathroom three times, since he left I kept going back in the bed. I was exhausted at this point and just wanted to sleep. My phone pinged, and I looked at the display it was Dean.

Dean: Miss you, beautiful. Hope you’re feeling better. It’s boring without you. Interview went well. Dinner sucked. I’ll be back in a couple hours. Mingling with the team to get some extra info.

Me: Have fun, I’m going to try to sleep. Hope I feel better in the morning.

Dean: I’ll check on you when I get back.

In no time, I drifted off to sleep. It took everything in me stay in bed and to keep sleeping.

  Dean

I arrived back to the room late. I felt bad, but knew she’d be sleeping probably. Once I slid the card through the door, I quietly opened and closed it. I walked in and saw she was sound asleep curled up under the covers. I thought it was super cute and smiled at her. I’m glad I didn’t wake her by opening that annoying hotel room door. I swear they don’t make them quiet at all with the hydraulic hinges.

I walked over to the desk and bumped into her purse, knocking it to the ground. Shit. I looked up at her and she was still sound asleep. I wanted to put my wallet on the desk and hopefully grab a quick work out in before I went to sleep. Since I wasn’t too tired, even though I should be, I thought I could burn off some energy. I leaned down to pick up her purse, which the average man would think was a damn suitcase in itself. It was huge black and could fit a Kindle and maybe some bricks. A bunch of items fell on the floor, including a bunch of envelopes. Must be bills to pay while she’s gone. I went to grab them, picking them up one by one and glanced at one of them that was titled Dean on it and sealed in the back. My brow raised in confusion, and I grabbed some more and realized they were all titled Dean on it. Okay, weird.

I looked at the bed and then back at the cards and slid my finger in between the crease opening one envelope. I pulled the card out and it was a Hallmark card. I flipped it over to the front and my mind drew a blank. I stood there and stared for a second before I opened the flap and read the inside.

I read the words but only half of them came to me. Father’s Day…Dean…have…daughter…sorry…loved you….hope you understand…

I stood there, pained, confused, tortured, hurt, and angry. I had several emotions running through me. I had to leave. How could she?

How to support an Indie Author 101

 BUY their book. The small amount of money made might just purchase the coffee to write the next chapter of their next book.

 Do NOT pirate. STEALING is ILLEGAL. These books are copyrighted to the author. If you can’t afford the book, ask a local library to carry it. Participate in giveaways from the author to try to win it. Talk with the author, sometimes they might be willing to gift a copy to you. Just don’t steal it.

 Feedback! Authors LOVE feedback. Take a moment of your valuable time and leave a review on a distributor site. Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Goodreads, etc. Your two sentences might just change something for the author to make their books better. You never know what your words can do for a person. Be honest, but also try to be kind. Always be kind.

 Spread the word! What is by far the most important way you can help! Indie authors struggle to be heard. If you’re a reader who has friends who are readers, tell them about our books. Encourage them to read them! Word of mouth is key for us authors. Support us by spreading the word!

 Do not return books. Please understand that the little bit these authors make help support their families and pay their bills. It’s their job. If you don’t like the book, be gracious, but please do not return it. Respect the authors enough to not return their work.

 Keep reading! Without you the readers, authors have no one to write for. You are our reasons to publish our work.
