She did. Why step out into the hallway just to walk five feet to her office? And what if she needed something in her office in the middle of the night? It was just more convenient to have that other door.

They passed into the living room, which also had a window overlooking downtown. It was an open concept, so the dining room and kitchen opened onto it. The kitchen cabinets were already installed, and the island was waiting to be placed and screwed down. The common bathroom was huge, as was her master bedroom. Well, huge compared to what she'd known all of her life. The master bath was small, but it was a private bath.

Both bedrooms overlooked the alley in back. Of course, they could see City Park and the recreational center, too. Good enough.

Finally, they took the last flight of stairs to the roof. Kate already had patio furniture up there. She had a grill, too. Johnny was waiting with hamburgers over the fire. There were three coolers full of drinks and more food.

She looked around, all tingly inside. And after everyone had their drink of choice in hand, Kate lifted her can of soda high.

"A toast to the town of Tennyson and the school district for putting me on retainer and making this all possible," she said. What she got from them would pay Morgan's salary, with a little left over for taxes. Kate already had plans for getting others to put her on retainer. "Cheers!"

They all drank. And then she sobered up, eyes burning, and lifted her drink again.

"And a toast and prayer for Daphne. She saved my life," she said. "May she find peace and happiness."

After taking a sip, Kate wandered away from the others. They started putting food out, laughing and joking. She walked around the edge of her new rooftop terrace, studying the nighttime town. And then she stopped at the corner overlooking the park. Jason's family home was completely gone and construction on the new home had begun.

"Time for me to rebuild, too," she whispered. "Maybe it's all going to work out after all. Those zombies aren't going to kill themselves."
