How could we want one another so fast?
“Yes, I’d love that.”
He placed the pearl in my hand and backed away. His absence left a cold chill along my skin I found unpleasant and lonely. This connection we felt. It must’ve been more than just that. It must’ve meant we were fated in some mysterious way we both didn’t understand. Yet, it was okay, I knew it. I felt it.
“Okay,” I whispered before I tossed back the obsidian pearl and swallowed it down. He handed me a cup of water to wash it down. I placed the cup on the nightstand, then stared at him for minutes before he spoke again.
“Thank you.”
“For what? You’re helping me.”
He chuckled. “Yes, but you saved me first.”
Chapter 9. Matthias
I watched her as she runs through the field of wildflowers with some strewn through her hair. I liked how she wove them together making whimsical tiara to wear on her head. She wore jeans, loose and worn with age as she pivoted and continued to run, throwing a ball so our pet golden retriever, Burger, could fly after it. I didn’t know why, but I found this moment oddly one of the most peaceful ones of my entire life.
True to their word, the Others hadn’t returned to bother us. They must’ve been watching, though, for sometimes I felt a slight sense of being studied from afar. I’d pause, peer around and wait to encounter the familiar hair raising sensation they usually caused me. But, the feeling always passed and the world continued to go about its business as if nothing happened. As if the strange and unusual beings who had tried to kill me for decades didn’t exist and were a figment of imagination. A story told to frighten the children in the night.
But I knew better. I’d had centuries to hone my senses and knew if I was being watched.
I hoped they never decided to rescind our deal, for the happiness I had now couldn’t and shouldn’t feel temporary.
I’d make sure of it. I’d die for it.
“Do you think they’ll come back for you?” Ruby asked as we both laid on the grasses and stared up at the cloudless sky. I’d shake my head and let her snuggle into my chest. It felt right, safe and calm next to her. I loved the way she smelled, the sound of her voice, and her face. Never in a thousand years had I ever thought I’d find someone like her to spend the rest of my life with. Who knew what eternity could bring?
“No. Well I hope not. The Others are a strange race.”
She turned her head and her pretty blue eyes flickered back and forth studying mine. I leaned over to kiss her lips, feeling their softness respond to me. Letting our lips press against each other and our tongues explore one another’s mouth, we sighed in harmony from the tingling it left us which sped up our immortal hearts and made the world disappear.
When we came up for air, I found her eyes gleaming and nothing in this world I’d ever seen compared to the happiness it gave me now.
“I hope I never meet them again.” She leaned on my chest and her eyes stared off into the distance. “Thank you for saving me. I never thought I’d meet someone that can make me feel the way you do. I’m glad they’ll leave you alone too now. You’d think they’d realize that they are the anomaly, not us, not anyone else. Killing is not normal.”
I shrugged and closed my eyes, stroking her soft blonde hair. “If they come, they’ll come. I’ll be ready, no matter what.”
She grinned happily and closed her eyes.
“When we finish our degrees, where do you want to go?
I laid back on my hands and watched as a single cloudy wisp made its way tumbling across the sky.
“We can go anywhere, do anything. The world has no limits and I think we should just do what we want to.”
She laughed. It was a sound I liked to think of when she wasn’t around. It was a drug that kept me alive, for now.
“Sounds good to me,” she said.
Under the flurry of bird calls and crickets starting their evening chant, we let the world revolve around us. Even if things did get temporary, it would be worth it for each and every second we had now.
