“Meaning, Bella is your sister. She’s your flesh and blood and now, you’re the last remaining bit of family that little girl has. I believe that family has some connection, even if it’s not understood or spoken. I’ve always felt it with my mother, even though she may not be a claimed psychic she has some connection to me.”
Kayci thought for a second. It was so obvious that it didn’t seem to occur to her. “Is it that easy?” She said aloud but to herself.
“Yes, I think it is. Just like you and I share that unbreakable link, you share it with her too. You both come from the same DNA. And while I’m sure you hate your father or what he became anyway, he was a brilliant practitioner of energy, you’ve said so yourself. There’s a link that exists from you, to Cayden to Bella. And he’s gone.”
“True.”
“Well, then whatever you two share is there for the taking. There’s something there that only you and Bella share and you have to find it.”
“We’re not twins.”
“No, but that doesn’t matter. It’s inside you, I believe that and I think you do too.”
“I guess so.”
“You guess so? C’mon babe, what would you tell me?”
She nodded. He was right. She’d tell him to get his head out of his ass and start making it happen. “I’d tell you to believe it and it will be so.”
“Exactly. You got this. Just close your eyes and find your sister. She’s out there and she wants to be found.”
“Okay. But I have to be careful not to alert Evan. I really don’t know how good he is and I don’t want her reaction to tip him off.”
Jordan huffed. “I know how good he is, and he’s nothing special. Everything that’s good in him comes from her or that nugget thing. I fully believe now that he’s been hijacking her talent all this time. He’s just good enough to do that because he’s known her since she was a baby. But when I got into his head, I saw he was nothing but a fraud and he knows it.”
“I got that too.”
“Yeah, I mean he’s a side show. If it wasn’t for Bella and that nugget he’d be working in a dirty roadside stand with a crystal ball, wearing a purple sequin vest.”
Kayci closed her eyes and reached out with everything she had. Following what Jordan had said, she looked for something inside her own frequency that was unique and tried to find something unique out there in all the others. They didn’t know how far away Bella was physically, but if she was truly a strong energy being, Kayci would see her frequency bouncing around out there somewhere.
She raised her energy above the Earth, scanning the entire span all the frequencies all over the entire planet. Looking down on the black globe and colors that beat like the heart of the world, she focused on the dark red pulses that spider-crawled through time.
It seemed like shooting stars with a pellet gun, an impossible task but something a wide-eyed child might try with hopes of success. That was Jordan, though, he wasn’t jaded and limited. He truly believed in trying to be limitless with his ability and she loved him for that. Maybe some of that wonder was finally rubbing off on her because something about what he said gave her the urge to try things she never considered. In fact, she started to employ some of his tricks and after a while, something strange started to happen.
A very faint, almost ghostlike red frequency line started to blink and emerge. It was so odd, she could hardly see it in her mind’s eye, and she couldn’t really feel it at all. The fact is you don’t really see the frequencies as much as you feel them. But your mind needs to quantify them somehow, so the colors become apparent because the soul is electric, it is alive and comprised of thousands of different frequencies.
As she saw the red line oddly wandering, she just observed it for a while. It was like no other she’d seen before. It was so skittish and seemed to have such a lack of direction and form. It seemed to flicker a little, much like the laser uses to draw Anna’s world. But Kayci knew, in her heart, it was Bella. She felt a connection that she’d never felt with anyone before. Even her brother, Josh, who was not really psychic at all, never had anything so similar that she could connect with.
The last thing she wanted to do was scare Bella away, and that was a very distinct possibility. There was no telling how damaged this kid was, having to bend to Evan’s every whim all her life. It could have stunted her ability or even ruined it completely. You can’t usurp other’s power for long before it just goes away, until you literally suck it dry. The person being usurped will eventually lose their will. If Bella has anything left for herself, it would be a miracle.
After observing for a long time, Kayci tried to make contact just to see what would happen. But the frequency at first just disappeared and reappeared in another location. Kayci had never seen that particular technique before. Usually they would move or jump, but the ability to disappear and reappear was something altogether different.
She tried once again to tap into the feed but again it did the same thing. Instead of frustrating Kayci, it actually made her laugh. It was such an interesting little move. To have that kind of control of the data you’re pushing out into the world was astonishing, especially given the age of the person doing it.
Unlike Jordan, who’s ability was hidden for so long, Bella had someone bring it out of her at an early age. In most cases, these abilities go latent as we age and enter into gestation periods until someone pulls them back out. The reason someone has to pull them back out is because as children we are all blessed with more natural ability in every way. But in life we learn how not to nourish them but to repress them, usually very quickly.
Bella, however, didn’t have to forget because someone had been there to keep the wonder alive. Evan might have been doing it for selfish reasons, but he still did it. And with any luck it would be his undoing.
Kayci tried again to make contact but this time she tried a little trick, a sort of a rope-a-dope. She tried to make her own frequency curious and odd, hoping Bella would investigate with some childlike curiosity.
After a few tentative moments, it actually worked. Bella curiously started wondering who Kayci was and why her frequency was so powerful. But she didn’t want to cause a distraction so she got what she needed and jumped out, leaving Bella seeking her.
Opening her eyes, she looked at Jordan and smiled. “It worked. I think we got him.”
Jordan twisted the key in the ignition. “Lead the way, sugar fish.”
Kayci looked at him funny. “Sugar fish? What the heck is that?”
Jordan pulled out of the parking lot. “When you’re reading frequencies you purse your lips like a fish kiss.”
“Oh, God, you mean I look like one of those duck-face girls with the selfie pics on social media?”
“Yeah I guess but you move them slightly like a fish. And you’re kinda sweet like sugar, so it just came to me.”
She shook her head. “You’re such a freak.”
He laughed. “Yeah, I know that. But I’m your freak so…”
Kayci sighed. “Just make your next left and stay on that road, freak.”
* * *
Jordan slowed as he approached the motel parking lot.
Kayci advised, “Stop here, I want to go on foot.”
He stopped the SUV and they got out, moving deliberately towards the motel’s dimly lit red brick walls and white columns that supported an overhang. Kayci walked up to the room on the far left, the cover of darkness hid them well. They couldn’t see inside past the heavy blinds but a distinct shadow moved about.
With little hesitation, she drew her gun and kicked the door in.
Jordan backed her up, but what they saw is not what they expected. A young couple stared back at them in shock. The young teenage girl in her underwear gasped in horror, the guy she was with raised his hands, shaking in his white boxers.
Kayci lowered her gun. “How long have you been here?”
The guy froze up, he couldn’t even speak. But the young brunette girl stood, h
er pink top stretched to her waist. “We’ve been here for an hour. Who the heck are you people?”
Kayci showed her badge. “Government agents, we were told a couple of fugitives were in this room. You didn’t see a man and a child did you?”
The girl shook her head. “No, we didn’t see anyone.”
Kayci looked to the guy and he was also shaking his head. “Sorry,” Kayci said. “We apologize for the intrusion.”
They turned and headed back to the SUV.
“That was unfortunate.” Jordan said as he opened the driver’s door and climbed in.
“Yeah,” Kayci pulled her door shut. “But those two will have something to talk about for the rest of their lives.”
“What now?”
“They were here, in that room, I’m positive. And it wasn’t long ago because I can still feel their residual frequencies.”
“Yeah, I can too. In fact, I don’t think they’re that far away.”
“No, they’re not.” Kayci looked up in thought. “In fact, I think I can tell you almost exactly where they are.”
Jordan nodded. “So, what you’re saying is that you want to know where the nearest docks are?”
Kayci touched her nose and pointed at him.
Chapter 37
It was too dark for Jordan to see any of the people milling around the dock. But the flashlights moved back and forth and bobbed up and down the length of the large boat. They moved onto the dock into the light on occasion, pulling supplies off the top of piles and walking them onto the deck.
Standing here, gave him a serious fit of déjà vu. It seemed like these psychic adventures always ended up near water. But there was a good reason for that. It was easier to escape into the unknown out in the more remote areas and in general, large bodies of water were relatively unoccupied in comparison to the land. So it was tougher for other psychics to find their frequencies.
Lucky for them, Kayci had learned a way to track Bella, and that’s all they needed. Now they were here, however, and they didn’t expect for Evan to have backup. But there were two other lights moving about the dock and boat and they weren’t little girls.
“He must’ve hired some help.” Kayci acknowledged.
“Probably the same scumbags from the chopper.”
“No, doubt that. They found the chopper. I think that was probably someone more sophisticated than these helpers. These are probably sailors or dock workers or just cheap labor to help him load the supplies.”
“Or drug dealers. Where’s he going?”
Kacyi shook her head. “No clue, but judging by that pile of goodies I’d say somewhere remote, and for a long time.
“How do you want to deal with this?”
Kayci raised her pistol. “I think there’s really only one option.”
“Ugh, this means we have to kill people.”
“Of course.”
“Great, I really—really hate killing people.”
“But these are bad people.”
Jordan could tell by their energy, they were very bad indeed. “Even so, it just bothers me.”
“You don’t have to kill anyone. I’ll take care of it.”
“That’s not fair.”
“I don’t mind doing it.”
“That scares me.”
“It’s kill or be killed. It part of my job.”
Jordan nodded softly. “I know. Sometimes it’s hard to reconcile why it has to be so ugly.”
“Life is ugly.”
“I guess so.” Jordan stood upright and without warning ran full speed across the parking lot, and turned up the dock. As he stomped loudly on the wooden planks he screamed, “I wanna be an Airborn Ranger—I wanna be an Airborn Ranger!” over and over again.
He came to a stop, face-to-face with a man hold a light in his face. Jordan smiled insanely as he could and said, “Hey dude! Do you know where I can find a bag of hammers?”
The scruffy man twisted his pudgy face. “The fuck you talking about?”
“Hammer? You know—them things people use to push nails into wood by whacking them?” Jordan moved his hands all over the place.
“Get the fuck out of here—you’re in the wrong place dipshit.”
A very skinny blonde girl with crooked, brown teeth came up behind the man. “What the hell’s this?”
The guy turned to her. “Fucking guy’s crazy.”
“Nooooo!” Jordan said. “I’m not crazy. Have you ever tried to eat soup with chopsticks? That’s crazy, impossible I’d say. It’s easier with a spoon but either way you’re still forked.”
The girl laughed then pulled a large knife and pointed it at Jordan’s face. “Wrong place to drop your crazy pill dickhead.” She motioned to the guy with a nod. “Put a bullet into his head and drop him into the drink.”
The guy raise a gun. “Sorry crazy dude—gotta do what the lady says.”
Jordan pulled his gun and shot the guy in the chest sending him flying backwards, shocking the girl. She didn’t have time to pull the gun from her waistband before Kayci shot her.
“Hey thanks!” Jordan said as they jumped on board the boat.
“Next time tell me the plan.” She hurried around the bow, Jordan followed close.
“I didn’t have one, just figured you’d catch on.”
“Lucky for you I did.”
They busted into the cabin and came face-to-face with Evan who held a gun to Bella’s head as she sat on his lap.
“Well—well. You two just can’t let me be.” He said.
Kayci kept her pistol trained but Jordan lowered his. He stepped closer to Bella. “Hi Bella, do you remember me?”
She nodded. Evan tightened his grip around her neck, pulling her so close to him there was no way to shoot him without hitting her.
Evan smiled at him, “Shut your mouth. Don’t you talk to her.”
He shifted his attention to Evan. “You hate me, don’t you Evan. I get it. As gifted as I am, I’m like your worst nightmare. They gave me the silver card, buddy, I’m a full fledged asset now and I didn’t even have to go through all that stupid testing you did.” Jordan laughed, “Which by the way, I saw your results and they were spectacularly pedestrian.”
Evan nodded with a knowing smile. “I know what you’re doing, tough guy, and it won’t work. You may be a better psychic, but I’m a genius and that’s never been in dispute.”
“Wow, that’s quite the ego you have there.”
“That’s not ego, you moron, that’s confidence established through repeated testing.”
“For a genius, you’ve sure put yourself in a dumb position.” Jordan glanced around. “You’re on a boat, and there’s no place to run. Just hand over the girl and we’ll call it a day.”
“Call it a day huh?”
“Yeah sure, we can bring you in without any bullets stuck in your flesh.”
Evan looked past him to Kayci. “You don’t have much to say. What’s the matter—cat got your tongue? Don’t you have anything to say to me? No words of wisdom?”
Kayci narrowed her eyes. “I just wonder if you know how good of a shot I am.”
Jordan added. “She is a great shot. I’ve seen her put a bullet in an eye from twenty feet away. And it looks to me like she’s only ten feet from you.”
Evan adjusted his position, getting more directly behind Bella. “Go head!” Evan dared. “Take a shot. But I don’t think you’ll take the chance. Because maybe, when you hit me my finger jerks and I pull this trigger.” He showed the gun now pressed in Bella’s left armpit. “Yeah, go for it. This is a forty-five, hair trigger modified pull, hollow points with splice magnesium tips. There’s no way her little body lives.”
Jordan tried to reason with him. “Look, Evan, the game is up. There’s no way out of here for you. I don’t think you want to die and all things considered, you killed your wife in a fit of rage, it happens, it’s not premeditated, your FBI career won’t be tarnished yet.”
“Oh, please don’t
even start. They’re going to erase me from existence. All I’ve done?”
“No,” Kayci offered. “They won’t. I can see to that. No one knows what you’ve done but us. I can say you were covert NSA all along, under my supervision.”
“Ha, you don’t have that authority.”
“Are you kidding me? I’m DRC now and I can say whatever the hell I want.”
Evan’s eyes narrowed. “You’re DRC?” He shook his head. “I don’t believe it. After SORC crashed and burned no way would anyone touch you.”
“It’s true.” Kayci assured. “I’m full on. I had an inside track.”
Evan blinked long and hard then snapped open his eyes. “It’s too late for that. I’m just going to bust out of here and disappear.”
Jordan asked, “How so? You seem kind of limited in your options? What’s the end game here?”
Evan turned a smile. “It’s funny you should ask.”
Suddenly a loud pop rocked the boat, sending a column of smoke shooting up from the ground between them. Jordan took a huge chance and ran through the smoke towards Evan but couldn’t see anything.
Then Jordan felt the impact to his face, he went down as he struggled to find his footing. He caught a glimpse of a pink and white sneaker through the smoke and he reached up and grabbed it. It tried to pull away but he refused to let go.
The struggle continued for a few seconds then a gunshot fired off, then another. Jordan refused to let go of that little sneaker and after another second, the struggle ended and Jordan got control of the small foot and the ankle that led to it.
The smoke cleared and Jordan was staring into the wide-eyed face of Bella who sat on her backside looking at him. “Kayci?” He coughed as he stood up, pulling Bella to her feet with him. “Kayci?”
“Yeah,” Kayci stood from a couched position. “I’m fine. Are you okay?”
Jordan nodded then winced at the sudden pain in his side. “Ouch, what is that?” He touched his side, then, held his bloody hand in front of his face. “Uh-oh, that can’t be good.” He felt light-headed and in the next second tired and weak. Then he passed out.
Chapter 38
Kayci handed Bella half of the granola bar and sat next to her in the blue plaid waiting room chair. “Are you okay?”
