A Dark and Stormy Knight Page 24

But it goes so much deeper than that. Because if you, beloved reader, identify as being on the LGBTQ spectrum, too, you have suffered in your own ways. You have been hurt, like Mara, for being something you cannot change.

Maybe, like me, you have been so lonely, so heartbreakingly lonely, wishing someone understood you. Maybe like me, you ached for love. Maybe, like me, you endured physical abuse, hiding the bruises; or maybe, like me, you knew the deep pain of betrayal by someone who should have loved you, but instead, took away the safe space of your home, and—with it—the innocence of your trust.

I wrote this story as a love letter to the girl I once was, but I also wrote this story as a love letter to you. To you, the person who has been bullied and beaten down. To you, the person who was hurt and harmed for being different. To you, the person who has ached because of love, whose heart was so badly broken, you wondered if you’d ever be able to put all the pieces back together. You have suffered, yes. You have felt deep pain.

But you have not stopped being beautiful.

I, too, have been broken by others. I have suffered for being a lesbian. I have suffered for love. And I have found in the depths of my heart a courage that kept me rising. Because becoming homeless did not mean that I was unlovable. Because being hurt did not mean that I wasn’t worthy of love.

Because my suffering did not make me worthless.

  And neither did yours.

You are strong. You are courageous. You are beautiful.

Every day that you have survived, every day that you have lived, you embody a dignity and strength that this world needs so much.

Thank you for being. The world needs you.

  And your story is important.

  Your story is essential.

  All my love,

  Bridget Essex
