Bridgetown's Eleventh Hour Page 23

by Shirley A. Roe

I hear from Edna that Sarah is doing well and loving her new big city career. Her and Will are still dating and I doubt she will rush into marriage, she is too career minded. She doesn’t correspond with any of us.

Edna and Dan love being parents and everyone is thrilled that they have their son. It is hard to believe little Tommy is having his first birthday this week. We babysat last weekend, just to give Matt a sample of parenting. He passed with flying colors. Dan told Matt that fishing is excellent this year and he can’t wait for little Tommy to be able to go fishing with him. As you know they rerouted the river and re-established the marshland near the subdivision at the north end of town. We hike and canoe there and the bird populations are growing rapidly. Last week we saw two Osprey flying over the marsh.

The auto plant donated one hundred thousand dollars to the new hockey arena and everyone is waiting for it to be finished. It will be fun ice skating on our new indoor rink and Matt, Dan and Bernie are anxious to play hockey.

The town is blossoming again and the horticultural society has done a wonderful job with this year’s planting. Matt even donated his time to help the ladies with the new flower boxes at the Town Hall.

I love working at the Banner and will simply work from home when the baby comes. Speaking of news, Charles Martin is running in the next federal election, after only a couple of years in provincial politics. Imagine him running the country!

The land where the chemical plant used to be is now a housing development and the police never did solve the murder case. It has become Bridgetown’s favorite mystery and people love speculating about what really happened. There is even a mystery dinner night, once a month at the café. Matt and I go every time, it is great material for a writer to use and I finally finished my third novel. I’ll have a copy for you Susan, when you get here.

Bridgetown is a wonderful place to raise a family. Life is good, can’t wait to see you in August. You can stay as long as you like, we miss you both so much. We want you to be the baby’s Godparents and hope you will agree. Love Christine.

Susan folded the letter and put her arm around Jack. “This place will be a dustbowl soon and after our short stay in New Zealand, we shall be back in Bridgetown for a couple of months. Home again, Jack!” He kissed her cheek, picked up the photo and smiled as the faces of their friends looked back; all of them together at the town fair, with Bernie proudly holding the trophy for the ‘Wacky Boat Race.’ Susan ran her finger over the faces, missing them all.

“Yes, Christine is right, life is good and soon we will be home.”

  The End.
