“Okay. Rain check, then.“ Grinning, I felt the urge to lean into my friend, to lay my head on his shoulder. The reminder I couldn’t, would never be able to, almost made me sad. But Asher was right: nothing could ruin tonight.
We sat there and talked until my toes were so cold, I was going to have to resort to my wooliest socks to revitalize them. As frigid as my body might’ve been, my heart was melty warm in the best way.
Sighing, I stood. “Okay, I’m ready.”
Asher followed as I picked my way up the beach, back toward my house.
“I can’t wait until your mom meets Jolene tomorrow when you have dinner together,” Asher said as we reached the garden.
“I know. I’m looking forward to it too.” I held on to that perfect feeling.
Because as impending as his departure seemed, Asher was here with me now. And I would hold on to that as long as I could.
