“Eh,” he says.
“Eh?” Okay, he definitely hit his head. My eyes scan the room looking for someone in a white coat. A doctor I can have look him over for the obvious head injury he must’ve suffered at some point in the last ten minutes. I didn’t see him fall and hit his head during any of his tricks, but maybe it happened after. He performed five great tricks on the halfpipe and then immediately hit his head when he walked off the course after his post-run interview.
“Who cares? It doesn’t matter to me because, win or lose, the next thing on my list is to have a big steak and then get married.”
My eyes shift back to him. “You didn’t…” My mouth falls open, not quite sure what I want to yell at him for first. “Remi, you’re going to the medal ceremony.”
“Nope.”
“Yes you are.” My head nods up and down repeatedly as though if I do it enough he’ll agree.
He scrunches his nose again and it’s definitely more annoying than cute. “Don’t you think dinner sounds better?”
“You are not missing this.”
“You confuse me, woman. All your man wants is a steak and you are denying that.”
“Remi, I will get you all the steak you want later. Right now you are getting your ass on that podium and accepting a mother fucking metal.”
“Damn you’re hot when you say fuck.”
“Oh my god. FOCUS!” I yell and snap my fingers at him, turning the heads of a few people close enough to pretend like they aren’t listening to our conversation.
He smiles, and it’s this self-satisfied little smirk that tells me he’s been playing with me the entire time. It’s okay. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
This might be Remi’s last race at the Winter Games, but he’ll always bring home the gold for me.

_____________
Megan Matthews writes smutty romance by day and hides behind her secret identity as a responsible Pinterest mom when other parents are around. She believes morning shouldn’t start until noon and chocolate should be calorie free. Living in Michigan she prefers sun over snow, hot chocolate over coffee, and wine over beer.
Preferring books over nature, Megan once displayed the entire Goosebumps series on her bookshelf. Her taste in reading has matured. She now prefers her heroes with rippling muscles naked in bed over brace-faced nerds running from murderous dummies.

Acknowledgments
Publishing this series was the craziest thing I’ve ever done as an author. I wrote His Last Race in April 2017 intending to publish this series with the Olympics in 2018. I had months and months to write four books and planned to do them in my “free time”. Then life happened and I didn’t pick this series back up to keep writing until November 2017. Since then it’s been me begging my friends and beta readers to make impossible deadlines and edit half complete documents. Without them this book would not be finished. And special thanks to my husband who literally spent hours putting in edits for me only to turn around and do them all over again on New Years Eve when the first batch were lost to the Internet. Without him I’d have laid on the floor and given up. I’m a mess, but it’s good to know my team has their shit together.
