‘And you will continue to run the negotiations, Sir Philip?’ asked one of the trusted agency correspondents, encouraged by this exceptional good humour. ‘There were rumours about your health.’

‘No, I shall stick with it to the end,’ Philip said cheerfully. ‘It’s true I had an eye problem.’ He smiled at someone in the crowd. ‘It seems to have cleared up over the last few days.’

‘Do you ever regret doing the job you do?’ asked the local stringer. With all these hot-shot international correspondents around, the only chance he had of filing a story was to go for the human-interest angle. ‘It must be a lonely life.’

At the edge of the hot little room Captain Soames and Texas Joe winked at each other. And Philip Hardesty broke into a full-scale grin.

‘Not in the immediate future,’ he said. ‘I stopped off in Coral Cove again.’ It had been an easy decision. Hardly any decision at all. There would be family and friends to tell, and the party of the century to hold in the future. Now they just needed to be together. ‘Only this time I got married.’

He held out his hand. Kit went to him. He put his arm round her and kissed her, unashamed, in front of all those cameras.

‘Gentlemen,’ he said proudly, ‘my wife.’
