SHARK BITES
Hammerhead sharks have a great sense of smell and are able to locate food easily.
The blacktip reef shark is bluish-gray in color and is usually found in the coral reefs and shallow lagoons of the tropical Indian and Pacific Oceans.
The pilot fish is carnivorous (eats meat, other animals) and not only follows whales, sharks, and turtles, but also ships so that it can feed on parasites and leftover scraps of food. The pilot fish came by its name because it was thought to lead, or “pilot,” larger fishes to sources of food.
Jellyfish have been on the earth for millions and millions of years. They were here before dinosaurs.
Bottlenose dolphins are not fish; they are mammals. They breathe air, just like humans do.
The longest living creature on Earth is the red sea urchin. Some have lived more than two hundred years.
The largest coral reef on Earth is the Great Barrier Reef, located in the Coral Sea near Australia.
Sharks have been swimming in the world’s oceans for more than 400 million years.
There are more than four hundred different species of shark, from the giant hammerhead to the goblin shark.
Sharks do not have bones. They are cartilaginous fish, which means their skeletons are made of cartilage, not bone. Cartilage is a type of connective tissue that is softer than bone. Humans have cartilage in their ears and nose.
The shortfin mako is the fastest shark in the ocean. It can swim in bursts as fast as forty-six miles per hour.
The whale shark is the largest shark in the sea. It can grow to be as long as sixty feet.
