  Chapter One

  Jacob

It felt good to be back on the mountain.

I missed it in the summer, when the snow melted. Sure, the lodge was still active in the warmer months, but there was less for me to do. I only went up when they needed me to fix something and worked part-time in town.

But now I was here until the snow melted again.

I’d always loved these mountains, ever since I was little. They’d introduced me to my greatest passion—snowboarding.

That was how I’d gotten here. Snowboarding. The rise of an up-and-coming champion, the literal and figurative fall that ended it, and now a full-time job here. On the mountain where I’d first learned how to snowboard.

It brought back a lot of good memories.

And it also brought the fans.

I’d been hot shit for a while, and people knew who I was. I was one of the draws of the resort—snowboarding lessons from Jacob Reed! Olympic medalist, world champion, retired at twenty-four!

Hence, the woman desperately trying to flirt with me.

I was supposed to walk everybody I had a lesson with back to the lodge, to make sure they went in and warmed up for a while. Even with warming stations, the mountain got cold, and there was a mandatory warm-up time after every lesson.

“So, me and my friends are wanting to go down into town, check out some of the bars.” She was walking too close to me, her hand brushing against mine.

I tucked my hand into the pocket of my parka. “Yeah, there’s some good ones down at the base of the mountain. I like McAdams’.”

  “You should show us.”

I glanced at her. Tall, blonde, and blue-eyed but stick-thin. Even her tight pants couldn’t make her ass look thick.

  Not my type. At all.

“Thanks, but… I’m good. I’ve got more lessons to teach today, anyway.”

  She huffed in disappointment.

I opened the door to the lodge, gesturing for her to go on in. “Well, it was nice to meet you.”

“Yeah.” The woman looked at me, biting her lower lip. Still trying to flirt, even after being let down gently.

“Maybe I’ll see you around? My room number is—”

“Maybe we’ll see each other.” I turned and walked away from her before she could get out her room number.

I didn’t need women throwing themselves at me. As flattering as it was, I was here to work, not play.

“Well, but—” She was calling after me, even as I walked away from her.

Some people just couldn’t take a hint.

But I saw my ticket out. Across the lobby of the resort stood my boss, Mark.

  Unfortunately, Melody was with him.

Mark was one of the owners of this resort, along with a few others. His group of owners and investors managed several properties; this one was his responsibility. However, he was sixty and ready to retire. At this point, he’d turned most of the resort responsibilities over to Melody. I liked him. He was a good guy.

  His daughter, though…

Melody was a terror. She was pretty, with gorgeous green eyes and a slim body, but her personality ruined it completely. She walked around the lodge like a princess, her nose in the air. I was sure she’d never been on the slopes; Prada did make ski clothes, but actually skiing or snowboarding might have messed up her hair.

I couldn’t stand her. And while I tried to keep my distance, do my own thing without bothering her, she made it hard.

Mark caught sight of me first. He looked up and smiled. “Jacob! Good to see you!”

“Mr. Sutton, hi.” I approached. We shook hands.

Melody immediately took a step closer to me. “Hi, Jacob. Ready for winter? It’s supposed to get cold this year.”

I shifted away from her, laughing. “Yeah, polar vortex and all that. And people still think climate change isn’t real.”

Her smile didn’t fade. “You think we’ll keep warm enough up here? I hope the power doesn’t go out.”

Mark cut in, saving me. “If the power does go out, there are two backup generators. There’s no reason for the heat to be off completely unless somebody just doesn’t do their job.”

He looked at me, smiling good-naturedly.

I laughed. “Don’t worry. I know the rules. Work first, play sec
ond.”

Mark nodded. His gaze lingered on me for just a moment.

I knew the other rule, too, but didn’t say it out loud.

  Don’t touch the boss’s daughters.

For a few minutes, the three of us stood catching up. Mark had only just arrived today. He visited the other properties his group owned at the start of every season, traveling with most of the other owners, but this one was his home base. He spent the whole season here every year, except for a few little trips to the other properties.

As we talked, Melody continued to try and flirt, and I made every effort to block her attempts. Even without the rule in place, I didn’t want her.

I looked away from her as she made another suggestive comment, turning to Mark. “How’s your other daughter? She’s still in school, right?”

“Just graduated, actually.” Mark smiled proudly. “With her masters’ degree. She’s actually going to be working here this season, creating a new marketing strategy for the resort.”

He reached out and gave me a playful punch on the shoulder.

I grinned, but it wasn’t genuine.

“Remember to smile for the pictures, huh?” Mark laughed at himself, shaking his head. “That’s why I hired you.”

  Right.

That’s all I was to him.

A name meant to get people to come out here.

Still, I chuckled. “Cool. Um, when is she supposed to get here?”

“Any minute now.” Melody’s expression was sour. She crossed her arms over her chest, looking at Mark. “Daddy, really, I don’t need—”

Mark held up a hand. “It’ll be good for you and your sister to work together. Don’t argue.”

Behind us, the lodge door opened, letting in a gust of cold air. My back was to the door; Mark and Melody, however, both looked up. Mark smiled. Melody did not.

“There she is!” Mark said proudly. “Maddy, it’s good to see you!”

  “Dad!”

I stepped aside as I heard footsteps coming toward us, clearing a path. I turned to watch as Mark’s other daughter joined us.

  My eyes went wide.

Maddy was gorgeous. Straight blond hair, braided half-back, and bright green eyes. She was shorter than her sister, dressed in casual clothes that hugged her curvy body beautifully.

The rules had never been a problem before, but now I was worried.

Mark wrapped both arms around his daughter, hugging her.

Melody looked on, her arms still crossed.

After a moment, Mark turned to me, turning Maddy toward me. “Maddy, this is Jacob Reed, Olympic silver medalist and our snowboard instructor.”

Maddy turned to me. Her eyes lit up as she swept them over me. “Nice to meet you, Jacob.” She held out her right hand.

I shook her hand enthusiastically. “Nice to meet you, too.”

Melody huffed but didn’t say anything.

Maddy let go of my hand but smiled at me. “I’ve already got some marketing ideas. I’d love to have a chance to get together and—”

Melody took the chance and cut Maddy off. “Whoa, hang on. You don’t get to bypass me and make decisions. You’re just the marketing coordinator. I manage the whole resort, and I have the final say. Got it?”

  Maddy’s face went red.

I felt a flicker of anger.

“Yeah, uh… I… I got it,” Maddy said quietly.

I frowned, looking back at Maddy. “We’ll talk. I’d like to hear your ideas.”

  She looked up and smiled.

Oh, I was in deep trouble.

Mark patted both girls on the shoulders. “Well. I’ll leave you to it. I’m going back down the mountain for the weekend, but I’ll check in soon. It’s supposed to snow overnight. Let’s hope for a busy weekend!”

I stepped back to let him say goodbye to his daughters but couldn’t take my eyes off Maddy.

She was definitely going to be a problem.

  Chapter Two

  Maddy

Dad left, leaving me with Melody.

This wasn’t exactly what I wanted.

I was grateful for the job, but working with my sister wouldn’t end well. I knew that much for sure. All my life, Melody had bossed me around, and now she was literally my boss.

I knew Dad had done it because he didn’t want me to struggle. And he wanted to keep the family business, well, in the family.

I understood, but I didn’t have to like it.

I watched the door close behind him. Melody was still standing nearby, along with the ski instructor.

  No, snowboard.

This was the guy Dad talked about all the time, some athlete I didn’t know much about. He was supposedly a big draw to the resort.

If that was the case, I needed to talk to him and find out what he was willing to do for marketing.

  Without Melody.

I knew her. She’d just shoot down everything I suggested. She’d make sure we went with her ideas, even if they weren’t very good.

It was how things always went with her.

I looked back at Jacob, giving him a smile.

  He smiled back. “So, Maddy…”

Melody moved between us. “Look, any marketing ideas need to be discussed with me. I’m not taking a risk when the resort’s been doing so well.”

I tensed, then lowered my head.

  Same old Melody.

Jacob laughed. “Hang on, Melody, just give her a chance to talk, all right?”

I couldn’t see the look she gave him, but I guessed that it was meant to silence him.

He just looked over her shoulder, though, focused on me. “Maddy. I’d love to hear your ideas. Dinner sometime?”

Melody turned so both of us could see her face. “Fine. If we want to talk about Maddy’s ideas, we’ll do it now. Here, at the restaurant.”

Jacob held up his hand to silence her.

  Melody’s jaw dropped.

It was hard not to laugh.

“Melody. Maddy said she wants to talk to me. Maybe you should trust your employees, huh?”

Melody’s face went red. She stared at Jacob for a moment, then looked back at me. “Fine,” she snapped and turned to walk down the hall.

I looked at Jacob once she was gone. My face felt hot. “Thank you.”

He smiled. “You don’t need to thank me. I just stopped taking her crap, you know? We’ll get you there, too.”

And he reached out to put a hand on my shoulder.

  I wanted to run.

  I wanted to kiss him.

I’d never been so attracted to a man before. He was so tall and had that rugged, bad-boy look that had always made me a little weak. And his eyes were so stunningly blue that they took my breath away.

  This was a problem already.

School had always been my first priority. Between that and years of being convinced that I wasn’t as pretty or fun as my sister, I’d stayed quiet. I hadn’t partied much while I was in college.

If Melody ever found out I was still a virgin, I would never hear the end of it.

I jolted out of my thoughts with the realization that Jacob was talking and probably had been for a few minutes. “I’m sorry, what? I spaced out for a second. Tired from travel.”

His hand was still on my shoulder.

  It was very distracting.

“I was saying, maybe we should meet here later tonight? Get dinner and drinks? Talk marketing?”

I nodded. “Yeah. Yeah, that sounds great. No Melody?”

“No Melody.” He chuckled. “Don’t worry. I wouldn’t invite her anywhere.”

  So, he wasn’t into her.

  I smiled.

  Maybe I’d have a chance.

  Chapter Three

  Jacob

I went back outside for my next lesson. Normally, I loved being in the snow, loved teaching.

But now that I’d met Maddy, I was distracted.

I kept looking back toward the lodge. I was sure I could see her from time to t
ime, in one of the windows on the upper floor. Maybe her office? Or maybe the room that she’d be staying in for the season?

Either way, it was keeping her on my mind.

I liked that she hadn’t freaked out when her dad introduced us. When I was younger, I’d liked having women fawn over me; now, it was just annoying. It felt like a lot of women only wanted to hook up so they could say they’d fucked somebody famous.

I wasn’t interested in being used like that.

But Maddy had just taken it in stride and kept the conversation about business. I appreciated that.

  It made her more desirable.

And that was bad. She was still one of the Sutton girls, still off-limits. And I definitely wanted to keep this job.

I looked back at the window one more time.

  Nobody was there.

  Damn.

  * * * * *

After my lessons had finished, I showered and changed. Maddy and I were supposed to meet at six, and I was right on time.

She came down a few minutes after I got to the lobby, wearing a dress over leggings, hair in a ponytail.

  She looked cute.

But not dressed for going outside.

She stopped at the bottom of the steps for a moment, looking at me. Then, she approached. “Hey, um… you’re all bundled up! I thought we were eating here?”

I chuckled. “Nah. Let’s get off the mountain for a few hours.”

“Okay, okay. I gotta run back up and get my coat. Wait for me?”

  “Of course.”

I watched her turn and hurry back up the stairs. When she returned a few minutes later, she was in her coat and scarf, tugging on a pair of thick gloves. “Okay!”

Together, we walked out to the back parking lot. My truck was there, already warmed up. I wasn’t going to make Maddy freeze while we drove down into town.

On the way, we chatted. She told me a little about her time at school; I talked mostly about what I did at the lodge, and places where I saw room for improvement. We both had to agree that there wasn’t much we could to about Melody, but there were other places where we could work together.

She really cared about this place.
