Kitty’s journals do not speak of ever seeing Princess Charlotte again. Kitty did keep and cherish her invitation to the royal wedding but she could not travel at that time, being with child.
Sadly, Princess Charlotte died 6 November 1817, one day after giving birth to a stillborn son. Charlotte was twenty-one years old. The whole kingdom went into deep mourning. Leopold did not remarry until 1832.
Had she lived, Princess Charlotte would have become Queen. It is said she was the royal personage most beloved by the British people until the time of Princess Diana of Wales, who also was taken in death at a young age.
Acknowledgments
So many people helped me along this publishing path. Many thanks to my beta readers, editors, and consultants: Allie Cresswell, Mikiya Goetz, Heidi Herman-Kerr, Cheryl Krutzfeldt, Jessica Lankford MS, and A.K. Paxton, for their eagle eyes and great suggestions. Special thanks to my daughters Elizabeth and Abigail, and granddaughter Mikiya who weighed in on blurbs and cover options; and to my son Dan who helped me keep my household in good repair as I wrote and revised.
Much appreciation to the members of my local writer’s groups and the many online writing and publishing and Austen groups for their feedback and support.
I must also acknowledge Miss Jane Austen herself, who remains a powerful and timeless source of inspiration, comfort, and entertainment for us all.
