Private Lies Page 18

Tears filling her eyes, she squeezed his hand. “I’d love to share it.”

  He stood. “Great. Let’s elope.”

Her mouth fell open. “Elope? We have to get you back to the hospital. You need rest.”

“I’ll get it. I don’t have to report to the station for two months.” He started to swing her into his arms, then remembered that was impossible in his present condition. He slid his arm around her waist instead, the warmth of her body seeping into his as he led her back to the window. “I have plenty of time to recuperate. How does Martinique sound?”

“You’re crazy. We can’t just run off the in middle of the night.”

He lifted the window and peeked out to be sure Steele was still at his post and he hadn’t followed Roxanne’s advice about moving the ladder. This was going to be a short escape if the agent had deserted him. But he was there, giving Gage the thumbs-up sign.

“You don’t like Martinique?” he asked Roxanne casually. He’d known her sense of responsibility was going to make this a bit of a struggle, but he wasn’t letting another night pass without making sure she was his completely and forever. “We could go somewhere else. I just picked a place where we wouldn’t be required to wear too many clothes.”

She groaned, then pressed her lips to the side of his neck. “We can not wear clothes right here, near the hospital.”

He glanced back at the bed. Tempting, but he had a judge waiting. “They have hospitals in Martinique.”

She dug in her heels as he climbed out the window. “Your dad is expecting me in the morning for my debriefing.”

  “We’ll call him.”

  “My brother.”

“We’ll call him, too.” Smiling, he extended his hand to her. “Come on, Rox. What are you waiting for?”

She laid her hand in his without hesitation. “I suddenly can’t think of a single thing.”
