Ribbons of Steel Page 27

by Carol Henry

“It’s terribly sad about Marian Aderley and her son,” Emily said. “Such a shame. She’s a wonderful lady. Those boys were so full of life. It’s going to take a long time for them to get over their grief.”

“Her husband is with her now, Em. They’ll be just fine.” Charley reassured her. He drew her into the circle of his arms and rubbed her shoulder. “He’s a changed man. Seeing as what the strike did to many a’family, Aderley has learned the hard way just how important family is. Like me, Em. I worried about you out here, having to leave your family. Drove me half crazy knowing how hard it was for you. If anything had happened to you…” He kissed her the way he had wanted to kiss her when first he’d stepped off the train. He’d given her time with the children while he got his own emotions under control. Now all he wanted to do was hold her and never let her go.

The railroad might have temporarily derailed their lives for awhile.

  Never again.

Charley drew back, and placing his fingers under her chin, he lifted Emily’s face to his. He lowered his head and met her waiting lips.

  Words were unnecessary.

Charley’s kiss promised a lifetime of togetherness and a renewed love that had been sidetracked for far too long.
