Heart & Soul: The Surprise (Heartland Series) Page 4

by Priest, Nicola C.

“So? We want details girl? What’s he like? What happened in the elevator? Is he really as good looking up close? Who were those two hotties?”

Sam held her hand up to halt the questions that were being fired at her and took a breath before answering each one.

“He’s nice. Nothing. Yes. His brother and I assume a friend. Anything else?”

“That’s it? Come on Sam, give us something, anything. You were trapped in an elevator with Alistair Lockwood for almost twenty minutes. You must have spoken with him.”

“We spoke, he’s a nice guy. Nothing else to say.”

  “But...”

“Don’t you have work to do Sadie? Because I know I do.”

Sam watched as the brunette clamped her mouth shut and pursed her lips, obviously unhappy that she wasn’t saying more about being stuck in the elevator with Alistair. What else could she say? Yeah, we were trapped in the elevator and if we had been five minutes longer he’d have fucked my brains out against the wall. Not exactly discreet.

Sighing as she flicked through her emails, she couldn’t help the smile that crept to her lips. She knew that whenever she thought about what had happened, she wouldn’t be able to hide her grin. It had been an experience unlike any other and one she was never likely to forget.

Shaking her head, Sam knew she needed to get back to work as she reached into her drawer, pulling out a file and placing it on her desk. When she straightened, she jumped when she saw Rachael, David’s PA, standing next to her. Her arms were folded and there was a scowl marring her otherwise pretty face.

“David wants to see you in his office.” Rachael said before turning and stomping away.

Whoa. What had crawled up her butt and died?

Locking her computer, Sam stood and followed Rachael down the office towards the room that she knew currently contained David and Alistair. Oh my god! What if David had guessed what had happened and was calling her in to fire her? What if Alistair had said something? No, he wouldn't and David couldn't actually fire her as he wasn't technically her boss, but he could sure as hell make things difficult for her.

Approaching the door, Sam paused slightly before smoothing her shirt and stepping inside. Rachael was sat at her desk bashing away at the keyboard. Clearly something was eating away at her. Sam waited patiently, knowing better than to walk in unannounced. She flicked her eyes around the office, looking out the floor to ceiling windows that gifted Rachael a wonderful view of Downtown Toronto.

She began to wonder if she would ever get an office like this one before she saw Rachael looking at her. Her expression made it look as if she was sizing her up. If she didn't know any better she'd have thought she was about to jump out of her chair and lay into her right there in the middle of the office.

"You can go in, they're waiting for you. Although heaven knows why."

The last part was said so quietly that she almost didn't hear it and Sam began to wonder what she'd done to deserve the attitude and hostility she could feel coming from her. Giving Rachael one last look, seeing she'd returned to her keyboard, Sam opened the door into David's office, bracing herself for what was about to happen.

  oOo

Alistair smiled and nodded in all the right places as David made small talk. He'd only seen her a few minutes ago, yet he was so anxious to see her again he was practically vibrating with excitement. He didn't know what it was about her that had him so distracted, but he couldn't remember the last time he'd acted like this because of a girl. Now that he thought about it, he didn’t recall ever acting this way over a girl. What was she doing to him?

When he heard the click of the door opening, he fought the urge to jump up from his seat and rush over to her. Instead, he waited for David to stand before taking a breath and getting to his feet slowly. He saw the smile on David's face and heard the click of her heels on the wooden floor. He has the sudden flash of turning round and seeing her wearing nothing but those heels and a smile and he had to stifle the groan that threatened to pass his lips.

Making a mental note to make that little fantasy happen, he turned to face her, seeing that she was indeed wearing a smile. He remembered how she'd made him feel when she’d smiled at him as he'd held her in his arms. Having that smile aimed directly at him had done things to his insides and he was dying for a repeat performance. Seeing David approach her, he dragged his mind back to reality and plastered a smile onto his face.

"Sam, thanks for coming in.” David said as he gently took her arm. “Please take a seat. Can I get you a drink?"

"Water will be fine, thank you."

Gesturing to the chair he'd just vacated, Alistair smiled when she took a few steps closer to him and nodded her thanks as she sat. He took a moment to breath in her scent before straightening and taking the seat next to her as David handed her a glass of water, returning to his chair behind his desk.

It was taking all of his willpower not to stare at her. She was so beautiful that it was harder than he ever thought it would be. He’d met hundreds of beautiful women throughout his career and staring had never been a problem, but Sam was a different matter altogether.

"I heard about the problem with the elevator Sam. I hope it wasn't too difficult for you." David asked her.

Alistair saw her head angle slightly as she went to look at him then changed her mind. It looked like she was having just as difficult a job as he was keeping her eyes to herself.

"It was fine David. Mr Lockwood was the perfect gentleman and kept my mind off the fact we were stuck in there."

Hell yeah he had, and he couldn't wait to do it again.

"That's good to hear. I'm glad he took care of you."

Sam had chosen that moment to take a sip of her water and, upon hearing David's words, proceeded to choke as she spluttered and coughed. Alistair reached out and took the water from her hands so she didn't spill it everywhere and softly patted her back, unable to stop the smile that lifted his lips. He knew exactly where her mind had gone at that moment as his had gone to exactly the same place.

"You okay?" he asked her, trying his hardest to keep the laughter out of his voice, realising he hadn't succeeded when she glared at him.

  "Yes, thank you."

Nodding his acceptance of her words, he removed his hand from where it rested on her back, feeling the loss of contact deep within him. Something inside was telling him to grab hold of her and never let go. He didn’t know where it was coming come from, but he knew it was something he intended to act upon as soon as he could.

"The reason I called you in Sam is because of our meeting yesterday."

Alistair watched her absorb the words before her eyes widened and her shoulders hunched. He watched David, hoping that the look in his eyes would tell him to hurry things along. Judging my Sam's posture, he could tell that she thought it was bad news. Then again, even when David told her, she could still think it was bad news.

"As you know, we met with Mr Lockwood yesterday to discuss the possibility of him accepting our representation in light of recent events involving his current agent." Alistair watched as she nodded, her eyes flicking to him for just a moment before she looked back. "Well, following that meeting and a recent discussion between myself and Mr Lockwood, I'm happy, no, I'm overjoyed to announce that he had accepted our proposal and as of today, he is a client of Robinson, Morgan and Green."

Alistair saw her posture relax a little when she realised it wasn't bad news before she turned to him in her seat.

"That's good news Mr Lockwood. Welcome to RMG."

"Thank you Samantha." He said with a smile, before turning to David. "I just have one condition that I'd like to add to our agreement."

Alistair looked between Samantha and David, both of them wearing curious expressions on their faces as they waited for him to continue.

"I'd like any dealings I have with RMG to be with Samantha."

  ~ 4 ~

What did he just say? Did she hear him right? He wanted her to be his
point of contact within the company? She might only be an assistant, but even she knew that this was highly irregular. She doubted David would agree to it, even it the client was Alistair Lockwood.

"Whilst I'm flattered that you would request me Mr Lockwood, it’s usually the agent who does those things, at the very least the Personal Assistant. I'm afraid I’m neither."

Sam saw the puzzled look on his face before he looked at David. When the furrow in his brow vanished, she guessed that the penny had dropped.

"I guess that explains why you're sat out there with everyone else rather than in an office." Alistair said. There was an edge to his voice that she hadn't heard before and she wasn't sure whether it was directed at her. "You misrepresented yourself David. I believe you said Samantha was your PA. Am I to understand that isn't the case?"

Sam sat back in her chair as she listened to him. He sounded pissed. Surely something as inconsequential as her job title couldn't make him this upset?

"My PA was ill yesterday Mr Lockwood, so Samantha graciously agreed to stand in for her. As you’ve seen, Rachael has returned today. I'm sorry if you felt I misled you. That wasn't my intention."

She kept her eyes fixed to his position as he slowly sat back in his seat. Resting his left ankle on his right knee, he looked relaxed, but she knew that appearances could be deceiving. He was like a coiled spring. Any minute now he was going to snap.

"Mr Hughes, whether or not your PA has returned today is irrelevant. Come to think of it, Miss Westfield's position at RMG is irrelevant. She conducted herself well in our meeting yesterday and I was more than impressed with the way she handled herself when we were stuck in the elevator earlier. If you want me to be your client Mr Hughes, Miss Westfield is my contact."

Sam felt her cheeks begin to heat at his words, knowing that he wasn't referring to how composed she'd been in the elevator. Composure had been thrown out the window, if the elevator had a window that is. Here he was negotiating with David for her to effectively be his PA, at least where he was concerned anyway. No wonder Rachael was pissed at her.

"I have no problem with that Mr Lockwood, but ultimately, the decision is Sam's."

Both men turned and she felt two pairs of eyes boring into her. Why did David have to be chivalrous and leave the decision to her. Even thought he wasn’t her boss, he was still her senior so he could just tell her she would be doing it. By having to make the decision herself, she was effectively saying yes or no to taking her earlier encounter with Alistair to the next level.

She wasn't naive, she knew that the only reason he'd requested her was because of what had happened between them. He had made it clear he wanted to take it further, even telling her as much when they'd halted their amorous antics. Any of the other PAs would be more than capable, she would be too and the more she thought about it, the more it riled her that Alistair was using her position just to get closer to her.

She highly doubted he would have asked for her had they simply rode in the elevator in silence. If nothing had gone on between then, he would probably be more than happy to work with David and Rachael.

She couldn't deny that there was an intense attraction between them. Even now, with David in the room, she felt drawn to Alistair and she realised that as she sat, she'd angled her body towards him. An unconscious yet telling action. She hated to admit it, but she wanted him with a passion she thought only existed in romance novels.

She also knew that agreeing to his request would mean she would have to break another of her rules. Sam didn't get involved with the people she worked with, and just because Alistair was a red hot movie star and sexy as fuck, didn't make that rule any less relevant. Sam had never been good at making decisions, and this had to be right up there as being one of the hardest she'd had to make. She knew it could do wonders for her career at RMG, but would her heart come out of it in one piece?

  oOo

Alistair hated waiting. Patience had never been one of his strengths and as he watched her, he could practically see the cogs turning. Was working with him such a hardship? Was it really that hard a decision to make?

The seconds ticked away as he sat back and waited for her response. He could tell she was thinking hard, probably weighing up the pros and cons of his request. He couldn't see any cons if he was honest. Her pay would increase, she would be getting valuable on the job experience and even though he knew it made him sound self absorbed, she got to spend time with him. After what had happened between them, he thought that would have been enough to make the decision for her.

Keeping his eyes on her, he sucked in a sharp breath when he saw her tongue flick out and run across her bottom lip. Like before, he believed she didn't know she was doing it and in turn, she had no idea what that simple action did to him. When he saw her do that, he wanted to suck her tongue into his mouth and work her naked, sweaty body into a frenzy before fucking her senseless. He had a feeling that working so close to Sam wouldn't be good for his health if something as innocent as her licking her lips caused that strong a reaction in him.

Several more seconds passed before he saw her back straighten and her chest rise as she took a deep breath.

"If you think I'm up for the job David, then I'd be happy to be Mr Lockwood's contact within RMG."

No matter how much he fought it, he couldn't stop the wide grin that spread across his face at her agreement. He knew that smiling was all he could do and not make a complete idiot of himself. Something told him that jumping up from his seat, pumping his fist and shouting “yes” wouldn’t go over very well. His day had just gotten a hell of a lot better, not that he needed it to get better after their little elevator ride, but now he got to see her as often as he liked, under the guise of work of course.

"Excellent." David said with an equally big grin on his face, but for wholly different reasons. He knew that landing him as a client was probably the biggest deal this company had made. Even though, from Chris' research, he knew they had some pretty high profile sports stars and singers on their books, he was arguably the most lucrative for them.

"I have a few jobs that I need to finish off but they should only take a day or two then I'll be ready start." Sam said

Alistair shot David a look and watched as the other man breathed deeply and turned his head towards Sam, keeping his eyes on him for a moment longer.

"Actually, I'd like you to start right away. Pass off any outstanding work you have to Rachael, fill her in on what you've done and what needs to be done and then we can get started. Is that okay with you Mr Lockwood?"

  "That sounds good to me."

Turning in his seat, he angled his body so he faced Sam. He saw her turn her head to him then look back quickly. She was so cute when she was uncomfortable and trying to hide how he made her feel. He was still fighting the urge to reach out and touch her, the only thing that was keeping him sane was the thought that he'd be able to do just that very soon, but right now he had to get out of there and cool down before he did something that he had a feeling Sam wouldn't appreciate her boss seeing.

  oOo

"I have a few things I need to take care of, but I can be back here in an hour. Is that okay with you Samantha?"

  "That sounds perfect Mr Lockwood."

Sam watched as Alistair nodded at her and then stood. He reached out to shake David's hand and with one more quick glance in her direction, he was gone.

What had she just agreed to? Working with Alistair might be good for her career, but it definitely wasn't going to be good for her heart. All she had to do was look at him and her mind went in the direction of what it would be like to feel him moving inside her, his hard cock pushing into her wet heat as she writhed underneath him. No, this was definitely not one of her best ideas.

After a few more seconds she turned to David when she heard him clear his throat, realising that she had been staring at the doorway that Alistair had just left through.

"Still star struck huh?" David asked. You have no fucking clue, Sam t
hought as she forced a smile to her lips. "I must admit Sam, I'm surprised that he wanted you so badly." You seriously have no fucking clue, Sam almost said out loud. She knew David had no idea what had gone on between then, but all she was hearing in his words were references to their heated exchange in the elevator. "No disrespect meant Sam, but are you sure you can handle this? I have a feeling Mr Lockwood is going to be very demanding."

Sam had to bite her tongue not to respond to David's words but she couldn't stop the smile on her face.

"I'm sure I'll be okay David. Thank you for this opportunity."

"Well Mr Lockwood didn't leave me much choice, but I know you're an ambitious woman so this is a step in the right direction for you.” After checking his watch he continued. “Now, we have fifty five minutes before he returns so why don't you go get the things you were working on and spend a little time going through them with Rachael."
