“I’m so sorry I worried you guys. I don’t know why I went up there alone. I would never put the baby at risk like that.”

“You weren’t thinking, baby girl. You were all excited about the baby and missing us being around to help you. It won’t happen again,” Rusty told her.

“Ready to try and sit up?” Jared asked.

“Yeah. I need to sit up. I need to go to the bathroom, too.”

“We’ll see how you do sitting, and then we’ll talk about the bathroom. We’ve got a pad under you so if you can’t wait, we’ve got you taken care of,” Jared said.

Heat crept up her face at the reality of what being unconscious for four days actually meant. No, she was getting the hell up. That was just wrong.

“Here you go. Nice and slow,” Jared let her pull on his arms while Rusty supported her back. “How is that?”

“Not bad. I’m a little dizzy, but I think if I sit here for a few minutes it will go away,” Jane said.

  “How’s the headache?” Rusty asked.

“Not too bad. I’ve had worse, but considering it’s been four days, I bet it would have been a lot worse before. At least if I had to be unconscious it kept me from feeling the worst of the pain.” She slowly moved her head around the room, taking in the disarray. “You guys sure know how to keep house.”

“We’ve been too busy trying to take care of you to worry about the house. We’ll straighten it up once we’ve got you on your feet again,” Rusty told her.

“I was just kidding. It’s not that bad. Not really.” They looked at her with doubt written all over their faces. “Okay. It is pretty bad.”

Jared chuckled. “You should see the kitchen.”

“Oh, God. Don’t make me laugh.” She held her head with both hands. “Ow”

“Easy there, hon. You’ve got stitches up there. You cut your head up there.” Rusty pulled her hand down then kissed the back of it. “Jared had to put four stitches in it. It’s close to your hairline, so I don’t think the scar will show.”

“I did the best I could. I’m not a damn seamstress or a doctor,” Jared groused.

“It will be fine. Don’t let Rusty tease you.” She drew in a deep breath. “Okay. I’m ready to try walking. I need to pee.”

“I’ll carry you,” Jared said. “There’s no need for you to try walking yet.”

“I can walk. I need to get up, Jared,” she said. “I can’t lie here any longer.”

“Let’s help her stand, and see how she is, before we let her walk,” Rusty suggested.

She let them help her stand then waited a second to see if she was too dizzy to stand on her own.

“I’ve got it. You can let me go now, guys.” Jane could tell she was weak, but she desperately wanted to go to the bathroom by herself.

“Not happening, hon. We’re walking you there and back. You’ve been on your back for four days. You’re bound to be weak,” Jared said.

  Rusty nodded. “What he said.”

She couldn’t help but laugh at the pair of them. They were so cute, and she hated that she’d worried them. They were so good to her. Even Jared, who’d just gotten to the point where he showed how much he cared about her was extra good to her. Tears welled up in her eyes.

“Oh, babe. Is something hurting? Do you need to sit down again?” Rusty asked, seeing her tears.

“No. Nothing’s wrong except I love you both so much and I did something stupid and scared you guys,” she said around the fat drops rolling down her face.

“Stop crying, hon. It’s all fine now. You’re awake, and you’re fine. Let’s just take this one day at a time now. You’ve got to get your strength back since you’re going to be in labor in another three or four weeks.” Jared patted her back. “Let’s do this.”

Jane nodded then groaned. Nodding was out for the foreseeable future. She let them walk her to the downstairs bathroom but drew the line at them actually keeping the door open.

“I’ll be fine. If I’m not, I’ll let you know.”

She did her business then looked at herself in the mirror. She looked horrible. Her face was sallow, making the blue-green bruising around the bandage on her forehead and around her eye look all the worse. She washed her hands then admitted that she was weak when she opened the door and nearly dropped into Jared’s arms.

“You can help me back to the couch now,” she said with as much dignity as she could manage.

“Easy, hon. I’ve got you.” Jared lowered her to the cushion then stepped back when she leaned against the back of the couch. “Feel like some soup?”

  “Yeah, that sounds good.”

“I’ll warm some up,” Rusty said and raced out of the room.

“It’s really been four days?” she asked.

“Yeah. Four hellish days worrying about you. Don’t do that to us again, Jane. I don’t think my heart can take it,” Jared said.

“I’ll be much more careful from now on. I still don’t remember anything past when you guys left to go shovel the snow. I don’t know why I’d have thought it would be a good idea to go up without you to help me.”

“Don’t worry about it anymore. Just remember that we always have your back if you need us. That especially goes when you’re pregnant, taking care of the baby, or just feeling bad. Never think we’re too busy or upset over something to stop you from asking for help. Got it?” he asked.

“I’ve got it.” She drew in a deep breath then let it out in a slow whoosh.

The short trip to the bathroom had worn her out, but she knew she needed to eat something for the baby’s sake before she took a nap. Plus, she was a little afraid that if she went back to sleep this soon she wouldn’t wake up the next time they tried. That thought scared her a little more than she was comfortable with.

Jane managed to eat half the soup with a couple of bites of a grilled cheese sandwich.

“That’s all I can eat this time. I’ll try for more later. I’m stuffed,” she told them.

“You did good for the first time. You need to rest now,” Jared told her.

“I’m going to let the doctor know she’s awake and see if he wants us to do anything else for her,” Jared said.

“I’ll sit with her,” Rusty said.

He settled on the couch and had her lean against his chest. It felt good to have his arms around her.

“Take a nap. We’ve got you, baby,” he said.

“I’m afraid I won’t wake up again,” she admitted.

“You’re out of the woods now. You can sleep. We’ll make sure you wake up in a little while. Rest.”

Jane finally allowed her eyes to close and almost immediately she was asleep.

  * * * *

“Think you’re ready to go back upstairs to sleep,” Jared asked.

“Lord, yes. I’m so sick of this couch. I swear I can feel every spring in it. I’ll be fine with you in back and Rusty in front to hold on to. I’ll be fine,” she said.

“What do you think?” Jared asked, looking at Rusty.

“She’s been walking around the kitchen and the living room enough the last two days. I think we can move upstairs with her now,” Rusty said.

“Okay. Here we go.” Jared followed as Rusty took the first step up with Jane holding on to his belt loop. “Remember. One step at a time. Nice and slow, Jane.”

  “I know. I’ve got it.”

She loved that Jared’s hands were on her hips. Yeah, she had the whole wide ass going on right then, but they didn’t seem to mind that she’d blossomed out there and in her breasts one bit. The rest of her weight was the huge baby bump poking out front.

Jane desperately wanted to go to the station to pick out what she wanted for the baby as soon as all the snow had melted. The only way they’d let her do that was if she was able to move around on her own without the weakness she’d had the last few days. She felt well enough. They weren’t buying it though.

“We’re almost there, baby girl. How are you doing back there?”r />
“I’m good. I think my baby is in the way though. I can barely hold on to your pants,” she admitted.

“Jared. Do you have her back there?” Rusty asked in a panicked voice.

“No problem. She’s doing fine. Keep going while we’re on a roll,” Jared told the other man.

Once they made it to the landing, Rusty whirled around and pulled Jane into a hug as much as he could. “I think you’re right. That little rug rat is poking out quite some ways.”

“Works better from behind,” Jared said, pulling her back into his arms. “See. Got her sweet ass cradling my cock, and I can kiss her cheek and neck while I play with these beauties.”

Jared massaged her breasts while Rusty watched, his eyes darkening as he did. Yeah, she liked seeing her men get all excited for her. She could tell Jared was aroused by the size of his cock pressing against her ass.

“Nope. Stop it, Jared. She’s getting aroused, and we’re not playing around when she’s just woken up after a fall.” Rusty shook his head and crossed his arms.

“I’m fine, Rusty. I want you guys,” she whined.

“Not happening. Stop pouting. You look like a six-year-old like that.” Rusty chuckled when she stuck her tongue out at him. “See what I mean?”

“Rusty’s right, hon. I shouldn’t have roused you up like that. I couldn’t help it. Anytime I’m around you I get like this,” Jared said.

“You’re both sadists. I can’t believe you’re refusing to have sex with me.”

“Not until after the baby is born. You’ve been through too much, and there’s only a few weeks left if your calculations are right. Plus, you know how unexpected things can be around here with the way the planet’s changed all of us. You might have miscounted and you’re actually due next week,” Rusty said.

  “Bite your tongue,” Jane said

  “Shut your mouth,” Jared said.

Rusty chuckled. “Well, it could happen.”

“Not if I can help it. I want another few weeks of getting ready for the baby. I want to go to the station and get all of the things on my list,” she told them.

“Nope. I’m staying here with you, and Jared’s going to pick everything up for you,” Rusty told her.

“No. I’ll throw a fit like you’ve never seen before if you don’t let me go with you. The three of us can make it an outing. I’ll be stuck at home again after the baby’s born, so this will be my last time to go.” Jane wasn’t backing off on this.

“I don’t want you overtaxing yourself,” Jared said.

“I won’t. I’ll waddle around when I can and then rest on a roll-around office chair while you guys push me to where I want to go when I’m tired. I’ve got it all worked out. When are we going?” she demanded.

“Holy hell. We’re never going to win this argument,” Rusty said.

“If the snow is all gone next week, we’ll go then. Only if all the snow is gone. If not, the next one depending on how you’re doing. I don’t want you going into labor at the freaking station. No arguments on that,” Jared finally said, shaking his head.

“I can’t wait. I need to look over that list again. Where did you put it, Jared?” she asked.

“First, a shower, then bed, and then you can read over the list,” Rusty told her.

“You guys are going to help me in the shower, aren’t you?” she asked, batting her eyelashes at them.

“Stop it, Jane. I swear. We’re just going to wash you off. No hanky-panky in the shower. It’s really too dangerous.” Rusty sighed.

“I know. I’ll be good in the shower, but I’m not making any promises about in bed.”

  Chapter Sixteen

“The snow is all gone. I want to go shopping.” Jane stuck her hands on her hips, frowning at the fact that she almost couldn’t because of her big belly.

“Honey, can’t you let me go for you, and then you can play with it when I get back?” Jared asked.

“No, and I’m not playing with anything. This is serious business. I want to pick out my baby’s things. Poor Randi ended up without some stuff when her men shopped for her. I’m not letting that happen to me. Besides, I need to move around some. I’m getting antsy sitting in one place for more than a few minutes.”

“Fine. But when you get tired, you’re sitting down and resting,” Jared finally agreed with a put-upon sigh.

“I’ll go get the transport and pull it up to the front door.” Rusty shook his head at Jared.

“What the hell are you looking at me for? I didn’t hear you telling her no,” Jared bit out.

“I was expecting you to put your foot down,” Rusty said.

“Like that ever works with her.” Jared walked out of the living room to the kitchen.

Jane was sure he was gathering all their cold weather gear. She’d be lucky if she could waddle with all the layers they’d pile on her. Still, she’d endure it if it meant getting to go pick out her own things. After hearing some of the terrible choices Randi had had to put up with, she’d been determined to make her own shopping trip.

The second they had her bundled up, she waddled to the front door and accepted their help down the steps then up into the transport, where they strapped her in as if they were going to the next town or something. They were going a block for goodness sakes. She endured the ride the few seconds that it took then the unsnapping and helping her back down, only to have them sit her down the second they were safely inside the building. She’d had to remind them to help her out of her many bundles.

“You point, and we’ll get it,” Rusty told her.

“Where are the baby things located?” she asked. “Never mind, I can pull them up on the computer.”

“No need. We already know where they are. We made sure to situate them in one general area so we could always find them if someone needed something,” Jared said. “Now sit on this chair and read off the list, and we’ll point you in the right direction.”

Jane had to admit she liked this kind of shopping. No money needed, no lines, no limits. She called out what she wanted then picked out the one she wanted from the ones they showed her. Then one of them carried it out to the transport. She made it through her entire list without lifting a finger, except to finger the baby clothes, blankets, and diapers. She’d had to touch them before she’d made up her mind which ones to get.

“Anything else?” Rusty asked with a huge sigh.

“We got everything on my list, but while we’re here, I need to look at a breast pump for when I need to store milk,” she said.

  “What?” Jared asked.

“You can store milk?” Rusty asked. “You pump milk from your breasts? That’s like milking a damn cow.”

“I’m not a cow. I may be as big as one, but I’m not a cow, Rusty.” She felt hot tears burn her eyes.

“Aw, honey. I didn’t mean it like that. I just never heard of pumping breast milk.” Rusty patted her back and held her face against his chest. “I’m sorry. Please don’t cry.”

“I remember Sandy talking about it, but I never saw anything about it. I’d forgotten, but if you’re going to be feeding the baby until he’s a year old, you’ll need to pump it some.” Jared shrugged. “I think I remember them over there. Just a second, hon.”

Jane pulled back and frowned up at Rusty. “If I only have one baby, I’ll have to pump since I have two breasts.”

“Okay, baby. I just didn’t know. I’m sorry,” he said again.

“Here you go. There are two styles. Want to read up on them and choose?” Jared asked, handing her the two boxes.

Jane read over them and picked one. Then she handed it to Rusty. “You can put it in the transport while I look at a few breast-feeding bras and tops.”

“I’ll hurry. I don’t want to miss this in case you have to try them on.” He grinned at her.

Jane rubbed her back. She’d been sitting for a while now, but her back still ached. She stood and walked around in a circle.

  “What’s wrong, ho
n?” Jared walked with her.

“My back’s sore. I’ve been sitting for too long. I need to walk around for a few minutes. Let’s walk over to where the bras are.”

Jared pushed the chair as he kept one hand on her elbow. They stopped where the women’s maternity clothing was. She’d made do with the few things they’d gotten when they’d first realized she was pregnant. Most of what she wore now were large gowns and the men’s huge T-shirts. She chose four bras after stretching them around her body to be sure they’d fit then picked out another four blouses she could wear and three pairs of maternity pants. Even after she had the baby, she’d need something loose fitting until she lost the baby fat.

And Jane was determined to do that.

“I think that’s about it. I’m ready to go now.” She looked over at Rusty, whose grin spread as wide as the Grand Canyon had been back on Earth.

“I bet you didn’t do well with going shopping with your girlfriends, did you, Rusty?” she teased.

“I didn’t go shopping period,” he said. “Online or a quick in and out at the local supermarket.”

“I should have known.” She looked over at Jared. “What about you? Did you go shopping with Sandy?”

“Some, but not a lot. She mostly shopped with her girlfriends,” he said.

She’d begun talking more to him about his wife. She felt like the other woman deserved to be a part of their history, and the more he talked about her, the more relaxed he’d been lately. In fact, Jared had been much less stressed around her since she’d had the accident. It hadn’t dawned on her until that moment.

“I don’t remember ever shopping with a man either. This was fun. Sorry, Rusty. I know you weren’t too keen on it.” She smiled up at him as they rolled her through the warehouse to the store.

Felicity met them at the door. “Hey, guys. I was just coming to see if anyone needed anything. Looks like you’ve shopped until Jane dropped.”

“I think we have everything I need. I have a feeling this baby is going to come sooner, rather than later. My back’s really been hurting the last few hours.”

“What?” Rusty’s face went pale as face cream. “Let’s get you home.”
