END Of DRAGONS
Chapter 1
The Truth Shall Set You Free
“What is this? What carnage is this befalling my journey?” His pulse quickened as he approached, still on foot. The beaten path unfolded onto a shocking scene. Strewn with scores of bodies, bloodied and burned throughout a clearing along the edge of the woods was an obvious campsite. Something horrific had taken place here. Unsheathing his sword, he proceeded with caution.
The sun was just rising, blanketing the dell with a disturbing reddish cast. It was dead quiet, and he could see his breath in the cold morning air. There, beyond the encampment, he could just make out the form of what looked to be a behemoth serpent-like beast.
Not sure what it was, he crept towards it. Its great under-belly facing him was still. He stepped closer and saw it was decapitated, a sword lying next to its severed head.
As he moved round it, he came upon the lifeless body of a young Pictish maid. He could tell she was Pict, by the striking black hair, and fair skin so like his own. She also bore the tattoos common amongst the Pictish people. She was perhaps only the age of 18, little more. It was obvious the beast was slain by her hand.
Saddened was he, by her loss, but took pride in the knowledge one of his own had put an end to it. His gaze traveled down the length of its back, covered with shining scales, mighty angular wings folded over them. It was then, he knew the cause of such butchery. The word formed in his mouth, “Dragon!” he gasped.
