Forty years later, the magazine’s TV analogue, MAD TV spoofed not only the movie, but the DVD extras, for goodness sake. A faux Julie Andrews introduced three “alternate endings” to the movie; in the final one, the von Trapp children manage to elude their Nazi pursuers by using their superpowers: eye beams, teleportation, etc. “Gretl—turn to metal!” cries Maria in one unforgettable line and, yes, the little girl morphs into Terminator-like titanium invincibility.
The von Trapp family as a superhero team? Well, why not? They have survived just about everything else. The Sound of Music seems capable of wringing every possible resonant note out of popular culture. And when you know the notes to wring—you can wring most anything.
