Two Wolves for Cat (Paranormal Shapeshifter Werewolf Romance) Page 9

Revenge was not only a dish best served cold, it was a fucking good incentive to weapon up—magically or otherwise.

“Hey… Dad,” Jayce muttered as he reached Vangadr’s side, reaching a hand out to touch his shoulder. The god reacted in an instant, twisting and slamming a bolt of power into Jayce’s gut so powerful he was sure his entire skeleton lit up.

“Ooooohhhfff!” The air shot out of his lungs as he was flung backward through the air, off his feet, to slam into the fence beside the house. It smashed to pieces, dumping him in a pile of white wooden shards. He groaned as pain lanced through his side, the telltale crunch of broken ribs sharp. A thought pulled power from within to heal the damage as he clambered to his feet, his gaze on Vangadr.

“What have you done?” The god looked at them both in horror, his hands held out in front of him. As they watched, the bright aura around him faded, receding back into his skin and disappearing until there wasn’t a trace left. “What have you done to me?”

“Funny thing about those wardens and their parlor tricks,” Jayce commented, his face hard as they stalked toward him. “Once we told them what we wanted to do and who to, they were really helpful. Let us into some of their oldest and rarest archives… we found some lovely little binding spells that hadn’t been used for… oh, easily a couple of millennia? Pretty much the last time someone wanted to lock a buncha angels up.”

Surprise flared in Vangadr’s eyes. “The binding? They found that… but that was G—”

“Yeah, the big G. Seems someone got it out of heaven, just in case anyone needed to deal with the little shits again… or any other asshole who got too big for his boots,” Ryder growled, his wolf side evident in his voice as they cornered Vangadr against the side of the porch and the house proper. No way out. Jayce slammed a hand out, pinning the god to the wood by his throat. He tried to fight, but without his powers, he was no stronger than a mortal… and smaller than either of them.

Fear flooded Vangadr’s eyes, replacing the arrogance, as if he’d just realized the situation wasn’t going his way. “I can give you whatever you want. Money? It’s yours,” he promised, talking so quickly his words tripped over each other in their rush to get out of his mouth. “Women? Those too… men if you’re into them. Kids, even.”

“Kids? You fucking sicko!” Ryder’s snarl was echoed by Jayce’s and Vangadr squeaked in terror as they both shoved their faces into his, teeth longer and sharper as their wolf sides pushed forward.

“We only want one thing from you, asshole.” Jayce didn’t know if it was him or Ryder who spoke, but it didn’t matter. They were one and the same when it came to this. One soul, two bodies, one iron will fueled by vengeance.

“Yes! Yes!” the god babbled. “Anything! It’s yours.”

  Jayce grinned. Ryder spoke.

  “We want your death.”

Vangadr’s screams filled the air as they struck, one going for his throat as the other punched a hole through his ribcage to his heart. Blood splattered up the white-painted wood in a crimson arc as Jayce pulled back, the god’s heart in his hand. Blood covered his skin up to the wrist in a grisly gauntlet as the heart pulsed slowly, still beating even though it had been removed from its body.

Vangadr wasn’t screaming anymore. Instead, he made wet, gurgling noises, clutching at the front of his ruined throat as Ryder spat the gobbet of meat he’d torn free to the decking at their feet. He turned to look at the heart in Jayce’s hand and nodded as the realization of what they had to do filled them both.

“No!” Vangadr’s mental scream filled their heads as they both lunged, taking bites out of the heart. Within seconds it was gone, consumed as they consumed the power of the god who’d inadvertently sired them both.

  And sealed his fate.

There was a blinding flash of light, and a moment later they stood alone on the porch. The blood, the body of the god, and any evidence of the fight was gone, erased as though it had never been.

Ryder smiled, rolling his shoulders, and Jayce felt him testing the strength of the power that now rolled through them as, he too, did the same. For a moment, temptation rose, the siren call of absolute power. Behind it, though, lay the stink of corruption. Jayce closed his eyes, an image of Cat filling his mind, and banished both the temptation and the power to where he couldn’t reach them.

“We don’t need to be gods…” he started, opening his eyes to find Ryder watching him.

“No, we just need to be men… for Cat,” Ryder finished and then grinned. “Maybe we should play wolf just for her though.”

  Jayce nodded. “Agreed.”

And with that, the two turned their backs on godhood and left to find the woman they planned to worship for the rest of their lives.
