Bad to the Bones Page 23

I had to flip, too, to tell the story of the forced sterilizations. It was the hardest thing I’d ever done, give that testimony and relive the operation, but it meant Bodhisattva wouldn’t go scot free, and Virginia wouldn’t have to testify. My testimony was enough. We hadn’t been able to save Ginny from Bodhi’s medieval tools, but I comforted myself that we’d at least saved countless future women from the bath house table. Ginny had been working with June Illuminati up at the Leaves of Grass farm.

Federal prosecutors went on a rampage of relentless investigation. People were pouring out of Bihari by the hundreds, bailing on the sect, especially now that it had no leader. Poona was taking the brunt of the federal charges—assault, bioterrorism, arson, immigration fraud, conspiracy, and attempted murder, if you can fucking believe that.

What I had overheard in the bunkhouse, Poona telling the nurse about taping Shakti saying ten thousand people had to die? That was her way of getting disciples behind her in her murder plot. She was going to do away with Shakti anyway. Not that she’d make a better leader. Poona was about to strike a deal any moment, but either way, it’d involve prison time.

Rhetta had been bumping uglies with the other Prospect, Mergatroyd. Rhetta and Mergatroyd were theoretically on the same club level as Knoxie and I, but those two were clearly treated as the bottom rung. Poor Mergatroyd had to clean Knoxie’s bathroom, so to speak. “So it’s true? I didn’t want to interrupt you for just any bullshit.”

“Look what Knoxie just gave me. Yes, it’s true. I’m going to get my passport photo taken!”

Knoxie escorted me outside once I put the earrings on and the box away. My dad was probably waiting with Ginny in my side of the hangar, where my mechanic’s tools were. We paused to shake the hand of Mann Montana, schmoozing with the constituents who had powered his rise to mayor. Needless to say, Bihari’s candidate slunk out of sight on Election Day, although Montana still buried the other candidates by a wide margin.

I smiled when the red-headed clown Kneecap tried to shake Montana’s hand and Knoxie rudely shouldered him aside. Some things never changed. My dad and Ginny stood in the hangar doorway, not quite comfortable with the rowdy crowd, outsiders in a strange land.

My dad was taking me to get my first adult identification as “Bellamy Jager.” Knoxie and I were going to the Virgin Islands for our honeymoon. Up until now, I’d been living a double life, never sure if I was Asanga or Bella.

I was combining and melding all the formerly scattered parts of myself. I realized as I looked around that I had gathered all the good parts of my life around me and had done away with the bad. Rhetta and Gia were here to remind me that seven years at Bihari hadn’t vanished completely. My sister and dad let me know that my birth family wasn’t utterly fucked.

It was my new family, the Bare Bones family, that let me know I’d never be alone again.

I have an identity now. I’m firmly rooted in this reality.

If you ain’t living on the edge, you’re taking up too much room.

The rose-colored illusion of Madison Shellmound’s girlish crush on biker Ford Illuminati is stomped into smithereens by his crude father Cropper, Bare Bones motorcycle club President. Fearing Ford will kill Cropper if he finds out, Madison flees, becoming an upstanding cardiology nurse.

Madison and Ford have an ill-fated, star-crossed love that will last their lifetimes. Ford is a lifer in a different sort of enterprise, the gritty full-throttle club of guns, blood, and allegiance to his brothers. Twelve years and several tours of SEAL duty later, Ford is thrust back into Madison’s arms on the worst day of his life. Madison’s prospect brother Speed has screwed up big-time and owes the club his life. She offers herself to Cropper as a sacrificial lamb to save Speed.

But how long until the fiery, full-on outlaw Ford discovers that the woman he loves was treated like a degraded slave by his own father? Well, meet the new boss. He’s not the same as the old boss.
