Tears fill my eyes again as I look down at her. I never imagined we’d ever have this moment, and part of me still finds it difficult to believe it’s real. But it is. Our baby is balanced on my lap, and my husband is holding us both. It’s almost like we’re already a family.
A family. Our family.
It’s more than I ever could have dreamed possible.
“Elizabetta.” My voice is almost broken as the tears finally spill down my cheeks. “For your grandmother.”
“It’s perfect.” He kisses my cheek. “It’s all…perfect.”

When Victoria drifts off to sleep sometime later, I take our daughter from her arms. She’s sleeping, and she stirs slightly as I hold her against my chest. I rise and go over to the window.
Below, the city is glowing. People are walking back down to the city from the ballroom—some singing merrily, some leaning against each other in exhaustion. Dawn is only a couple of hours away, but I can still hear Christmas music coming from the Grand Ballroom. It’s faint but magical. A few flakes of snow drift down from the sky, adding to the peaceful white blanket on the ground.
I look down at my daughter. Our Christmas miracle has arrived, and like I told Victoria, I find her absolutely perfect. I see so much of her mother in her.
My worries haven’t disappeared. If anything, they’ve multiplied—now that she’s here, I feel even more responsible for her. She’s so small, so delicate, so fragile…I’d do anything to keep her safe and protected. And I will.
Right now, though, looking out the frost-kissed window, I feel a deep sense of peace settle over me. I brush my fingers across the wisps of hair on Elizabetta’s head.
“Merry Christmas,” I whisper to her. “And happy birthday.”
