Amelia Bedelia Digs In

“What’s the plan?” asked Alice. “Can I join you?”

“Absolutely!” said Pearl. “We’ll meet you guys later.”

“Thanks, Captain Pearl,” said Jason, giving her a salute.

“You’re welcome, Captain J,” she said, saluting him back.

“We’ll meet you for ice cream,” said Amelia Bedelia, smiling. She was happy that her best friends were such good friends with each other too.

As the parade continued and their ship passed by, spectators on both sides of the road burst into applause. Amelia Bedelia spotted her parents standing next to Bob and Aunt Mary. She waved to get their attention, then pointed at the new name. Bob extended his spyglass to take a closer look. He laughed, giving them a thumbs-up.

  “Bob approves,” said Jason.

He gave Amelia Bedelia a giant hug.

Sailing down Main Street on the good ship Hereami, Amelia Bedelia reached up to her necklace again, grasping the piece of eight. Rubbing it between her thumb and forefinger, she thought about all the people and moments in her life that had led her to this one right now. She couldn’t help thinking about the ending of Treasure Island, when Long John Silver’s parrot cries out, “Pieces of eight! Pieces of eight!” Amelia Bedelia kept rubbing her piece of eight, wishing that this voyage, and this summer, would never end.
