“Good luck with that, but let’s wait a bit more,” Mud said, remaining seated.

  “Why?”

“About now,” Mud said, looking at his wrist display, “they’re starting to think we’re up to something. A few more minutes and they’ll really start to bond about being annoyed with us. It’ll work in our favor after a while.”

“I want to argue with that. I really do,” Mills said, sitting back down. “But I won’t.”

  CHAPTER 33

DAYS LATER. The Amalfi’s night shift worked away the quiet hours. The bridge crew checked incoming reports, shuffling things around so the day shift could deal with anything that might wait. The shift commander scanned a readout and sighed, hitting a button.

The lights in Mud’s quarters flashed on, and an alarm rang out angrily. He rolled out of bed, grabbing his staff as he did, to limp over to his leg brace. Getting dressed quickly and strapping on the brace, he called up to the bridge.

“S’Mud, what’ve you got?” he said, forcing himself fully awake. Even as he asked, he hit his wrist communicator and woke the rest of the Insertion Team. A slap on the doorplate and Mud walked toward the hangar while waiting for the details of their new mission.

He found himself smiling as he adjusted his goggles. Once more, he thought, to make the unknown known.
