“Plague take all of his weapons away and someone get some zip ties so we can tie him up,” said Becky. Plague didn’t move at first just looking down at his bag and then up again at Hobbs. “Well buddy I hate to do this to you but I guess I have to. So be a good boy why don’t you and just take your vest off and lay your weapons down on the floor.” Hey buddy boy why don’t you just take them all out in one quick swoop. You know go out with a bang. Hobbs ignored the voice in his head and complied with Plague’s instructions. Lilly came back with the zip ties and Hobbs just slowly placed his hands behind his back. He could feel the plastic tightening around his hands and sat down waiting for whatever would come next.

“Well someone needs to keep an eye on Cowan and Hobbs. Cowan is doing a little bit better but we need to get him some medicine or else his wound can get infected. So I guess I will be the first one to take watch and you guys get some sleep,” said Edward. “Yeah good idea. Well why don’t you three ladies sleep over there,” as Plague pointed towards the back of the store. “And why don’t you gals let us men handle things over here.” He looked at them and smiled. To his surprised the women started walking towards the back of the store but were conversing amongst themselves but Plague could not hear what they were saying.

“Now Doc, do you mind if I call you doc?” Plague didn’t wait for a response. “Do you think he will make it? I mean shit where in the hell are we supposed to get meds. I reckon everywhere around here or anywhere as a matter of fact would be raided except maybe a hospital. Meds are like gold now a days.” “Well I am not sure. All we can do is just sit and wait and see what happens. Right now he is not running a fever yet so that is good.” “Well yeah I guess we just have to wait and see. Why don’t you go and get some rest Doc you have had a long day.” “Well I am not sure if I can really rest with everything that’s happened and I am a little bit worried you know?” “Yeah I know what you mean but give it a try I will wake you up when it is your turn to take watch.” “Just know I am not a doctor but I have read plenty of books.”

Edward slowly got to his feet and looked at Cowan then to Hobbs and then back to Plague. “Well if he starts to sweat and run a fever wake me up ok?” “Yeah sure thing Doc.” Edward retreated towards the back where Lilly was sitting talking to the two other women.

Night came quickly and sleep overtook all of them. Plague looked over at Hobbs. He sat down next to him. “You know Hobbs I understand what you did even if some of the others do not realize exactly what you sacrificed. You were just protecting them. There were better ways to take care of this situation instead of shooting him in the leg. That was a really stupid thing to do. Now I have seen men crack up while I was over at Nam. I mean hell we had a sergeant that cut off a Vietnamese’s head took a picture and sent it back home to his mom. Boy did he get pulled quickly. When they went through his stuff he had a necklace of ears just lying there. I even saw where he cut himself each time he killed someone. He said it was to keep count.” Plague sighed, “Yeah there were some real nut jobs over there.” Hobbs said nothing. “Well, all I have to say is get some sleep tomorrow because it will be a long day for you I am sure.”

The moon was full and provided ample light in the store. Edward startled, woke up for a moment and thought he had seen something move. His eye lids felt droopy and he justified the movement was just Plague trying to keep himself awake. Without another thought Edward closed his eyes and went to sleep.

Cowan continued to lay motionless on the floor. Just the rise and fall of his chest as he breathed in and out. Sweat started to pour down his face as his body raised its temperature to help fight off the infection. Then he felt a hand come around his mouth and fingers pinched his nose. He tried to move to somehow fight off his attacker but his arms and legs didn’t respond to his commands. He kept trying to move or try to grunt to get someone’s anyone’s attention but all that came out were muffled sounds that eventually faded away.

  Cowan was murdered.
