I could only pray that all would work out. Just before I drifted to sleep, I caught Aiden’s soft whisper of my name. Calm settled over me. If there was a fight to be had, we would hit it head-on.
I smiled and let the night pull me into its depths.
Chapter 13
Town bells rang, and the doors to the throne room opened. Anyone who was anybody stood within the walls. The place was packed beyond capacity. I marveled at the town’s finery on display.
After all, a royal wedding was at hand.
A thin aisle separated the rows of chairs on the main floor, and as the crowd turned to face us, Aiden stepped into view.
My heart stilled, and I sighed at his regal beauty.
He looked magnificent in formal clothing of the court. His tunic was a deep blue with black leather insets that matched his pants and boots. His crest stood out against the crushed velvet, adding to his outfit. He clasped his hands behind his back and turned fully in my direction. The minute our eyes met, an electrical current passed between us as strong as it had that first night we had met.
Aiden’s smile grew into a magnificent grin that brightened my heart. I could see the twinkle in his eyes, even at this distance.
“Are you sure about this man?” my father asked, leaning into me as if what he had said was a big secret.
I glanced at him with his crutch under one arm and his other hooked through mine. “I’ve never been surer of anything in my life.”
With that, we started the slow procession towards a future filled with promise and adventure, not to mention all the steam I could handle.
