When Aleesha returned home, Savage was nowhere to be found. She called his phone numerous times, only to keep getting sent to voicemail. She stayed at home and waited for him to arrive. He finally got home around 10 that night, and when he did, she knew it was leading to more drama. She was sitting in the living room watching Pretty Little Liars when Savage walked through the door. He had a fifth of Hennessey in his hand, and Aleesha could tell he was already drunk from the way he was staggering.

“Where the fuck you been?” he asked as soon as he walked in.

“Where the hell have you been, and why didn’t you answer yo phone when I called you earlier?” she asked back as she sat straight up.

“Man, you been gone for two fuckin’ days and didn’t answer yo phone not once, and now you tryna hop on my head for doin’ the same shit!” he yelled. “Miss me wit’ that.”

“I had my reasons, what’s yours?” she calmly asked.

“Man whatever, I don’t feel like goin’ through this shit,” Savage said as he tried to walk toward the bedroom.

“Well too mothafuckin’ bad,” Aleesha said as she stood up from the couch and started walking after him. “You never wanna man up and face the fuckin’ truth. All I wanted to know was why that thirsty ass bitch had your number.”

Savage stopped in his tracks and turned around to face her. “You really wanna know that fuckin’ bad?” he asked her, annoyed.

  “Yeah I do,” she admitted.

“For some weed,” he plainly stated.

Aleesha just shook her head. “That’s a bold face lie. If she wanted some weed she could take her ass to one of the shops or get the shit delivered like everyone else.”

“Man, you trippin’ on shit for no reason,” Savage stated.

“There is a fuckin’ reason. Why the fuck does she have your personal number when you have a business number for shit like that?”

“Cuz I bumped into her one day and I gave her the wrong number,” he lied.

“What the fuck ever, Savage. I don’t know why the fuck I keep dealing with this shit,” she said as she shook her head.

“You actin’ like I’m fuckin’ the bitch.”

“Shit, you probably are, but it’s cool. Just know that as long as you out doin’ you, I’ma do me,” Aleesha said as she turned around and walked back toward the couch.

“And what the fuck that mean?” Savage asked as he walked behind her.

Aleesha turned around to face him. “You know what the fuck it means,” she stated matter-of-factly.

Savage stared down at her. “So it’s like that now?”

“It’s been like that,” she said as she gave him a menacing glare.

“Yup. Fasho,” Savage said as he pushed past her and walked out the door.

Aleesha walked to the doorway. “Where the fuck you goin’?” she yelled out after him.

“Don’t worry about it, just do you cuz I’m finna go do me!” he yelled as he walked toward his car.

Aleesha slammed the door and locked it.

She went straight to the mini bar and grabbed a bottle of New Amsterdam Red Berry vodka. She opened it and took a huge gulp, and out of nowhere, tears rapidly began to fall from her eyes. She continued to cry and sip from the bottle as she laid on the couch and watched her show. She did this for three hours, finishing a little over half the bottle, before she passed out.

  ***

She woke up the next morning to her cell phone ringing, with the bottle of alcohol still in her hand. She looked at her HTC One and saw that it was Mary Jane Getaway calling. She had forgotten that she was reviewing resumes today and was supposed to be meeting with one of the candidates. She informed the shop that she was running late and would be there in a half hour. She pulled herself off the couch, hurriedly showered and got dressed, throwing on a white Nike sweater, a pair of black Nike sweats and some all white Nike Blazers, and was out of the door in twenty minutes.

She was glad that when she arrived at the shop, Savage wasn’t there. She interviewed the candidate and went right back home, since she wasn’t in the mood to be around people. She snuggled up in her bed and decided to pass time away by going on Facebook. As soon as she logged in on her phone, she had over 20 friend requests, 13 inbox messages from random friends, and over 40 notifications. She went to her friend requests first, and the first person on the list was Noelle Banks.

No this messy bitch didn’t send me a request, Aleesha thought as she clicked on Noelle’s name to view her page. She read the first status and immediately felt her temperature rising. The status read: Bitches at home lonely while I got they nigga in my bed callin’ me baby.

Even though she was mad, Aleesha couldn’t help but laugh. She wanted to comment on the status, but didn’t. She realized she could either keep entertaining the drama, which was sure to come, or be the bigger person and leave it alone, so she logged off and rolled her a blunt.

As soon as she lit the blunt, Aleesha heard the front door slam. A minute later, Savage came walking into the bedroom. She didn’t say a word as she stared at him, watching his every move while continuing to smoke the blunt.

“What?” Savage asked, irritated while taking off his black 501’s.

“Nothing, looks like you had a long night,” she replied sarcastically.

“Nah, I was just busy today.”

“Oh really?” she asked, nodding her head, “cuz according to Noelle you spent the night and was all in her bed calling her baby.”

“I don’t know what the fuck you talkin’ about,” he said as he looked at her. “Fuck man, for just one day can a nigga come home and not have to deal with the bullshit?”

“Maybe if you was honest, you wouldn’t have to deal with bullshit,” she replied with a lethal stare.

“Aight, you want me to be honest. Yeah I fucked Noelle last night. I didn’t spend the night with her though.”

“You a mothafuckin’ lie,” she said, already knowing the full truth.

“Man, why the fuck does it matter anyway. You doin’ you, remember?”

  “Yeah, you right.”

Aleesha got up and left out the room.

“Fuck this,” Savage said as he put his pants back on. He grabbed his keys and was right back out the door.

Aleesha was tired of crying over Savage. She decided to finally get even, so she gave Milasia a call.

“Hey boo,” Milasia sang into the phone.

“Hey baby. What are you doing?” Aleesha asked halfheartedly.

  “Nothing, at my mom’s.”

“Oh tell her I said hi.”

“Okay I will when she gets back. Her ass left to the store to get somethin’ to drink an hour ago.”

“Knowing her she probably went grocery shopping,” Aleesha said, letting out a light laugh.

“Man I know,” Milasia said, laughing. “But what you doin’?”

“Shit, I was calling cuz I needed to get a number from you.”

  “Who’s?”

Aleesha hesitated for a moment. “Cali’s,” she said as she lowered her voice.

  “You a skank.”

“Bitch, it’s not even like that,” Aleesha said, lying through her teeth.

“Sure it ain’t. Hold on,” Milasia said with a laugh.

A few seconds later, a male was speaking into the phone. “Hello?” his deep voice bellowed into the receiver.

“Hello, Cali?” Aleesha asked, feeling butterflies in her stomach.

“What’s crackin’, Leelee, long time no talk,” Cali stated.

“I know, what you been up too?”

“You know me, gettin’ this bread. I heard about your dispensaries and shit. I’m happy to see you doin’ good.”

  “Yeah, how you been?”

“Good, livin’. How about you? You still wit ol’ boy?”

“Unfortunately yes,” Aleesha said with a sigh.

“Somebody don’t sound too happy,” Cali said, reading the tone of her voice.

  “I’m not. Are
you busy?”

  “Nah, why what’s good?”

“I wanna see you,” she told him in her most flirtatious voice.

“Oh really?” he asked in his smooth, deep sultry voice.

  “Yeah, I’ve missed you.”

  “How much?”

“How about you meet me at the Days Inn on Highland and I’ll show you.”

  “Aight, I’m there.”

  Pillow Talkin’

Marcus sat in Milasia’s bed after a long sex session smoking a yay blunt, which was a weed and cocaine mixed blunt.

“Damn I missed you,” he said, passing her the blunt.

“Uh huh. You missed this pussy,” she stated matter-of-factly as she sat up and took a hit from the blunt.

“Yeah, you right. But I missed yo ass too.”

“Shut up stupid,” she replied, laughing. Her cell phone started vibrating, alerting her that she had a text message. She picked it up off of the end table, and responded to the message. She then seen that she also had notifications from Facebook, so she viewed them. “Ugh, I’m so tired of seeing this bitch,” she said, scrolling through her news feed as she took another hit from the blunt and passed it to him.

“Who?” he asked as he took a drag from the blunt.

“You know who. This bitch swears her life is perfect. She’s always callin’ somebody a hoe but sneakin’ around with the next bitch’s nigga and her and her nigga are still together.”

“Damn. How you know?” he asked her, shocked. “She ain’t ever been the hoe type.”

“Cuz I caught her one day, and Cali tried to play me like I was stupid. She stopped by his house not knowin’ I was there, but she stayed in the car while they was outside. I was gon’ walk out and bust her bubble, but I stayed in the house. When he came back in I asked if they still fucked around and he told me no, that it wasn’t even her in the car. But later that day, I ran into her and I was just like woman to woman, are you two still fuckin’ around. She said yeah, every Tuesday.”

“That’s crazy, but why do you care so much?” Marcus asked as he hit the blunt and passed it to her. “You can’t get mad at him for sneakin’ around. Shit, we doin’ the same thing. Everybody is wrong in the situation.”

“I don’t care,” Milasia stated as she hit the blunt. “It just makes me mad cuz he really hurt me over this bitch and he don’t care. And it’s like we just barely got our relationship back to the level it used to be. All I ask was that he stay away from her.”

  “Why?”

“Cuz, she’s the reason we fell out in the first place. So I’m like why would you keep fuckin’ with her?”

“It’s not that easy sometimes,” Marcus confessed.

“It can be,” Milasia said as she hit the blunt and passed it to him.

“Would it be easy for you to stop fuckin’ with me?” he asked as he looked her straight in the eyes.

“What we have is different,” she said as she got lost in his charming green eyes, “but yeah, it would.”

“Yeah right, you could never leave this dick alone,” he stated as he took a hit from the blunt.

“Yeah I could,” she declared. “Anyways, I’m not talkin’ about us, I’m talkin’ about them.”

“Shit, stop talkin’ and do somethin’ about it then,” he said as he took another hit from the blunt before passing it to her.

“Like what?” she asked taking a hit from the yay blunt.

“You tell me. You know I got you though.”

“I know,” she said as she sat and pondered for a moment. “You know what? It would be funny if he thought she set him up,” Milasia said as she put the blunt out in the ashtray on the end table.

“How?” he asked, looking at her wide-eyed.

Milasia ran down the details of her plan to Marcus, and he thought about it for a moment.

“Shit, aight. Let me make a call real fast,” he said as he called the one person who he knew was always down to ride for him. Marcus told his homie Smurf to meet up with him at the spot because he needed him to put in work, and would tell Smurf the rest of the details later. Smurf agreed, and Marcus was out of the door to their meeting place.

  ***

When Marcus arrived at the spot, Smurf was already there waiting for him.

“Wassup nigga?” Smurf asked as they exchanged dap while he walked through the door.

“Shit. What’s goin’ on?” Marcus asked as they sat down on the couch. Smurf lit a blunt while he took a swig from the Crown Royal bottle he brought with him.

“Same o’, same o’,” Smurf said as he passed the blunt. “So who we puttin’ in work on?”

  “Some nigga named Cali.”

  “Where he from?”

“Mafia Projects,” Marcus said with disgust in his voice.

“Oh yeah?” Smurf asked with a smirk.

“Yeah nigga, and we gettin’ paid,” Marcus replied happily.

“Shit you know I’m wit’ it,” Smurf assured him.

“Aight, fa sho’. We doin’ this shit next week. I just need you to get a whip.”

“Shit, we can use the Caddy. I wanted to sell that mothafucka anyway.”

  “Coo’.”

The two men finished talking about the details of the plan. They made sure they went through every aspect of the plan, making sure they didn’t miss anything. After Marcus was sure that Smurf knew all that he needed to know, Marcus was out of the door.

The following Tuesday, everything was going according to plan. Cali already had a room and had been awaiting for Aleesha’s arrival, and when she finally got there, the two men sat waiting outside in the Escalade for three hours until she left. Thirty minutes later, Cali was seen leaving the hotel, and they started trailing him.

Marcus, with Smurf riding in the passenger seat, followed Cali as he made a couple of stops at various stores, all the way to Passion’s house. Marcus parked around the corner so that Cali couldn’t see them, but they saw him, and they waited another two hours until Cali was finally leaving.

“Finally this nigga comin’ out,” Marcus said as he started up the car. He drove slowly around the corner and knew it was now or never. He rolled the window down as he put his foot on the accelerator and opened fire.

I would like to thank everyone who’s been supporting me this far and who has taken out the time to read something I’ve put so much dedication into. I really appreciate it. This book is solely dedicated to my wonderful grandmother Sheila. I’m so grateful that you took me and my brothers in and did the job for my mom when she couldn’t. I’m sorry for any and everything bad I did when I was younger, but I’m thankful for all the ass whoopings, because I now know right from wrong. I thank you for everything you’ve instilled in my head to make me the person that I am, and for stressing how much of an importance education really is. You taught me what it means to be a strong black woman, and to not give up no matter how hard life is. You’ve always kept my faith alive and proved to me that no matter what negativity life throws at me, I can and will overcome it. Thank you for the wisdom, encouragement, guidance, and experiences you’ve given me. I love you granny.

  June 18, 2014

It was 11 o’clock in the morning. Aleesha had just woken up to the sounds of her alarm clock when she realized that she was in her bed, alone. She wondered where Savage was and thought about calling him to see where he disappeared to, but changed her mind knowing he would have only gotten out of bed that early to go handle business. She groggily rolled out of bed, still tired from only getting 5 hours of sleep. She turned on her 62” flat screen to the channel 3 news, and went into her bathroom to get her day started.

“This is Amie Jenkins reporting to you live in Redlands, this just in. A drive by shooting last night on the 100 West Pioneer block left a man in critical condition at Loma Linda Medical Center. The victim was identifi
ed as 23-year-old Christopher “Cali” Davis. He was shot four times, including once in his chest, and was rushed to the hospital and underwent extensive surgery. Doctors were able to perform the surgery and remove the bullets, but the victim fell into a coma shortly after. When police asked residents what happened when they first heard the gunfire, they all reported to have instantly taken cover. When one of the residents finally came outside, they rushed over to the victim and immediately dialed 911. Some witnesses were able to catch an unmarked black SUV fleeing the scene, but no suspect has been identified. No one is sure as to why the shooting occurred, but police are further investigating the crime. If anyone has any additional information, Please contact your local authorities. Back to you at the station, Rick.”

Aleesha just stood there as she listened to the announcement the newscaster had made. Wow, she thought, processing what she just heard. The sudden slamming of the house door broke her out of her trance.

“Baby, where you at?” Savage yelled through the house.

“I’m in the bathroom, I’m ‘bout get in the shower!” she yelled back.

“Aight hurry up. Don’t forget we have this long ass drive to make.”

“I know it’s gone be a quick shower. I’ll be out in a little bit.”

Aleesha stood in the shower and started reflecting on the past couple of months in her life and her relationship with Savage. Although they lived together, for the past couple of weeks it was as if they had become total strangers. They slept in different rooms and even stopped having sex altogether, until last night.

Aleesha had arrived home close to two in the morning after going out clubbing with her friends. Savage had been sitting in the living room, smoking a blunt as he stared indifferently at the wall. Aleesha stood in front of him for a few minutes, hoping he would say something to her. When she didn’t get a response out of him, she started crying and went into her room to start packing her things. Savage came in there when he heard her slamming things around.
