She held up a forefinger, meaning for him to wait one moment, took an extra-large gulp and then did as he asked.
King Mallik sighed his disapproval, Jakke and Dazz stared at her, but the look on Jassin’s face was worth it all.
Disgust.
She could only hope that he found her so repulsive that he backed out of this preplanned mating.
When third meal ended, King Mallik and her brothers laid their napkins on the table. Her father looked her in the eyes and said, “Why don’t the two of you go for a walk in the garden? Get to know each other a little better.”
She narrowed her eyes at her father and then plastered a fake smile on her face when she faced Jussin. “Shall we?”
He inclined his head.
The two of them walked around the garden, not really talking. Finally, Kattlyn broke the ice.
“Why would you want to mate someone who doesn’t want you?”
“Honestly?”
“Yes. I don’t understand why you would tether yourself to a loveless mating.”
He laced his fingers behind his back and glanced her way. Not once had he tried anything with her, and Kattlyn wondered if he would be truthful. They were alone, so no one would hear his words, and her father would never believe her if she told him. Father already knew she didn’t want this mating and expected she would say anything to get out of it.
“That is a fair question.” He looked around, making sure they were still alone. “I am in love with Vanna, my consort, and she lives with me. When I take you for a mate… and I will… it will be to have young and secure my ties to the royal family. Nothing more.”
Kattlyn felt kicked in the gut. That was worse than anything she could’ve imagined. A tool! He would use her as a tool and discard her when finished. She felt horrified as her heart pounded in her chest. She would run away before she would ever let him anywhere near her body.
She held her chin up and said politely, “Thank you for telling me that.” And she meant it. She would go against her entire family before she mated Jussin. Even if it meant they would disown her.
The next evening, she was sitting in the dining hall with Sydney and the other mates when Zekke arrived with his own mate. Kattlyn was happy for her brother, but dammit, she wanted that for herself. Was that so wrong?
And then…
He spoke…
She sniffed the air…
Something clicked inside her as he stepped forward.
Her true mate.
Kattlyn couldn’t move as she sat there staring at the Human male. Her nostrils flared with every breath as she fought the need to run to him. His smell beckoned her to him. Her core clenched tightly, and she wanted him to take her, not caring who was there.
When Krista leaped into his arms, Kattlyn fought the urge to rip her away from him.
He belonged to her!
