Dominic nodded. “I will be there. I want to hear exactly how close all of this was to your dream.”

Leesa rose up onto her tiptoes and kissed Rave on the forehead. She took a moment to breathe in his scent and then dropped down from her toes and let go of his hands. Moving to her mother and brother, she grabbed each of them gently by the arm and began guiding them across the field, smiling as she walked.

Not a bad day’s work for a novice wizard, she thought.

  EPILOGUE

  Leesa awoke with a start.

For a moment, she had no idea where she was, but as her eyes adjusted to the darkness she realized she was safe in her dorm room. Her back felt warm—she was pretty sure she knew what that meant. She rolled over and saw Rave lying next to her. She smiled.

Rave smiled back, but even in the dimness, she could see the concern on his face.

“Did you have another dream?” he asked.

“Yeah, I did…I think.” Leesa’s brow furrowed. “Funny, I can’t remember it, though. How did you know?”

“Right before you woke up, your body shook almost like a dog shaking water from its fur.”

Leesa smiled at the image, picturing Max right after he had scampered out of Black Pond. She hoped she hadn’t shaken quite that violently.

She wasn’t all that surprised that she had experienced another of her dreams. Her book warned about the possibility, saying that successfully summoning a dream was sometimes like opening a portal—more visions might rush through unbidden in the following nights. The question right now was: what had she just seen in the dream that so troubled her?

She closed her eyes, trying to bring back any memories at all from the dream, but the images continued to elude her. Even so, she felt another shiver run through her body. With Rave lying so close to her, she knew the shiver had nothing to do with being cold. And that left only one other possibility—that even unremembered, her dream had been scary enough to truly frighten her.
