As soon as he says “friends,” my heart dips. Is that all he wants between us? But then he places his fingers under my chin to tilt my head. My eyes meet his again and he smiles.
“More than friends. I don’t want that to change, but I also want more than our friendship. I want us to be together. As a couple. I won’t see anyone else.” His lips meet mine in the most tender, soft kiss. He pulls back and tilts his head.
“I’d like that,” I admit. “Just don’t break my heart.”
Luke smiles. “Vases are the only things that’ll break between us.” He laughs as he looks down at the flowers. “I’ll get you a new one, by the way. I didn’t want to carry glass and risk your shaky hands.”
I roll my eyes and swat his chest. He lowers his lips to meet mine and kisses me as if he’s sealing his words.
As our mouths meet and I feel the strength and tenderness in his kiss, I know he’s not lying or trying to fake something for the crowd. This kiss is real, and I know now he means it. No matter what others say.
