Whatever came to pass, they would overcome it. They, for this was a part of nir life now. When ney had left Summertooth with Belest, Miris had wanted nothing to do with him. Now, ney did not want to leave him. Perhaps there was room on the Dragonfly for an assistant after all.

Mirva insisted on packing a bag for Belest, no doubt full of treats and warm clothes. Terryn found Miris shortly before they left and graced nem with a warm smile at odds with her stern manner and dress. “Thank you for bringing him home,” she said, inviting nem into a deep and grateful embrace. “We can sleep in peace now, because we know he will be flying with you.”

“I promise I’ll keep him safe.” With Seres’s help, ney was certain ney could.

After a last round of farewells and tight hugs from all of them, the children included, Miris and Belest walked down the road to the schoolhouse yard, Seres by their side. This time, nobody dared mutter accusations. They climbed onto the cloudship’s deck and packed away the gifts and supplies. Miris brushed a hand against the mast, traced a glyph, and with a joyful roar, Seres lifted them away into the sky.
