“Where are you going to be, if someone needs to get in touch?”

“On vacation,” Steve said. He shut the door on Bob’s shout and left the building.

He caught a taxi to the station. Steve found his first-class cabin. He pulled the cord for the steward and ordered a pitcher of water, ice, and a glass. He assembled a drink from Silene’s gift. He thought about her as he sipped his drink and watched the world go by.

  Epilogue

A young woman walked with Steve down the platform. She had accepted his proposal of marriage. They were to meet his parents, though he was not aware of this fact. This was a plot between Steve’s mother and his fiancée to heal the rift between two stubborn men.

Steve’s fiancée had taken it upon herself to write to her future mother-in-law. Between the two of them, they had planned the reunion. Mary Walsh simply told her husband that they were going to Hartford. Though he had groused and complained, he started packing. Steve’s fiancée believed he would be relieved at being forced to make the move toward reconciliation.

It was easier to get Steve to the station; his fiancée told him that she was meeting friends coming in on the train. When Steve stopped abruptly, she knew that he had seen his father. She felt the tension in the arm she held. Ignoring the expletive he spat, she continued dragging him forward. “You did this, you traitor,” he snarled at her, though his lips twisted in a slight smile.

A large gray-haired man with a battered fedora and a rumpled suit stood next to a short, stout woman with a round, friendly face, tracks of tears on her cheeks. Steve’s mother turned and waved merrily, propelling her husband reluctantly forward.

When they finally faced each other, both Steve and his father had their hands in their pockets. Despite the bustle around them, silence surrounded the group. A minute went by while the women stood by with knowing smiles on their faces. Mary winked at the young woman on Steve’s arm, who laughed. She drove a sharp elbow into his side and he yelped. Sighing, he stuck out his hand. Steve said, “Well, Dad, looks like we’ve been snookered. Welcome to Hartford. I’d like to introduce my fiancée, Silene Chandler.”
