“We might need to cook the burgers on the kitchen stove instead of the grill,” commented George.

“This should pass quickly,” Joel replied. “First, we will get a fantastic light show, followed by a torrential downpour. I give it fifteen or twenty minutes, and you won’t even know a storm had passed through here.”

Joel finished describing the upcoming storm, and, as if on cue, lightning struck and was followed by an ear-splitting crack of thunder. The windows rattled but held under the intensity of the wind and thunder. Soon, rain, mixed with hail and driven by huge gusts of wind, came down horizontally, crashing into the windows. As Joel promised, the storm was indeed entertaining—albeit just a little frightening. All eyes watched the storm a few steps back from the deck windows. The lighting increased in both intensity and frequency, lighting up the sky every few minutes. Amber was less brave and hid behind the couch, shivering. She had been through many storms but never got used to them. Joel and Joan sat with her, trying to comfort her.

Jackson commented, “She ran right into the mouth of the devil and attacked him. Probably saved our lives that day. But a little lightning and thunder scares her.” He petted her. “It’s okay, Amber.”

Then, the storm started to wind down. Off in the distance, a small ray of sunshine peeked through the clouds. A blue sky replaced the dark clouds, and the wind dropped down to a gentle breeze. As Jackson and the group moved back outside to the deck, they could still hear a few thunderclaps in the distance.
