The breeze sent Hannah’s body into a shivering ballet. “There’s a fire inside,” Aaron said, as the shiver left her body and most likely traveled through his.
“Let’s go,” she said, getting up from the chair and leading the way back inside. She was happy to find the Ammonoosuc room inside the inn empty. She and Aaron sat on the sofa in front of the fire. She slid her feet out of her shoes and curled her legs up against her body as she snuggled into his welcoming embrace.
Hannah’s fingers caressed the note in her pocket. She smiled, knowing what it said, what it meant. This was where she wanted to be. Today. Right now. For all of the tomorrow’s they would be blessed with, but the note wasn’t enough. The words needed to be spoken.
She pulled herself away and stood next to the fire. Pulling the note out of her pocket, she opened the front of the pellet stove, and tossed in the folded piece of paper.
“What was that?” he asked as she settled in next to him.
“Just a note. I was going to give it to you tomorrow,” Hannah said.
“So why did you just send it to a fiery death?” he asked as he welcomed her back with a warm embrace.
Hannah rested her head on his chest and tapped her fingers on his thigh in rhythm with his heartbeat. “Because it can’t wait for tomorrow. It’s something I need to tell you now.”
Aaron lifted her chin gently with his forefinger. “What did it say?” he asked quietly, his expression filled with concern.
Ah, maybe she was getting better with her poker face. Maybe she was just too exhausted for the excitement to shine through.
She smiled with all the love in her heart as she said, “We’re pregnant.”
Aaron’s eyes grew as big as a full moon, and his lips curved into the same shape as the crescent moon that had been smiling down upon them. He placed one hand on the part of her belly that would soon swell with the miracle of their love. His other hand cupped her face, his thumb caressing the blush of her cheeks. “Do you have any idea how much I love you right now?” he said.
She had an idea. “Maybe you should take me upstairs and show me,” she replied as her eyes narrowed and her smile turned from pure happiness to one of desire.
For a moment she wondered if he would. He just sat there, stroking her cheek, smiling like a little kid who had gotten everything he wanted for Christmas. “Hannah … I love you more than anything. You’ve made me so happy. Our family makes me so happy!”
She knew he was excited about the baby, but he loved Tabitha, too, and he’d never leave her out of the equation.
She caressed the hand that stroked her cheek, his love filling her as the electricity of his touch shot through her. “I know. I love you, too, Aaron. And our family.” She stood up, taking his hand with her. “Now take me upstairs.”
When the hungry smile crossed Aaron’s lips, Hannah knew Christmas wasn’t yet over.
