by Michael John Sullivan

He swung his arms up and down. “Can you see me Vicki? This is for you. Thanks for saying yes.”

Michael continued, smiling and crying at the same time. As he finished his mud angel, a man stood above him. He jumped up. “My Lord.”

  He smiled.

  “Why are you here?”

  Jesus’ grin widened.

  “Why are you smiling?”

“I witnessed a beautiful act of unselfish love – the greatest gift you can give to another person.”

He smiled again. A raging wind whipped through the small cave opening. Voices swirled around him. Snippets of conversation could be heard nearby in the cave.

“Who is there?” Michael asked, walking back to opening of the tomb.

He saw the stone displaced. “What the…”

“It’s time for both of you to go,” Jesus said.

“I don’t want to go back to Northport,” Michael said, turning around. There’s nothing left there for me.”

“There is much work to be done for both of you here.”

  “Both?”

A woman walked out from the cave.

  “Elizabeth?”

She stood in silence, touching and feeling her face.

  “My God, Elizabeth!”

  Michael hugged her.

“Where am I? What happened?” she asked.

“My God, my God, thank you.”

He embraced her tighter and kissed the back of her head several times.

“There is not much time,” Jesus said. He gave them His instructions.

Before Michael could say a word, He disappeared into the cave.

  About the Author

Michael John Sullivan graduated from St. John’s University with a communications degree and a promising future in the field of journalism after working for the official school paper the previous two years. Six months later, he found himself washing his hair in a toilet at the same university as he prepared for a job interview.

Riding a New York City subway train at night, his only companion was a green plastic bag of belongings. During these bleak days, he began writing his most reflective and emotional childhood and adult memories now featured in two of his novels, Necessary Heartbreak and Everybody’s Daughter.

Sullivan spent almost a month on the E train at night until he was rescued by relatives. After spending much of the past two decades raising their daughters while working at home, Sullivan returned to his notes in 2007 and began writing Necessary Heartbreak: A Novel of Faith and Forgiveness. It was published by Simon & Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint in April 2010. He finished Everybody’s Daughter in 2012 and is currently writing the last book in the series, The Greatest Christmas.

Sullivan lives in New York with his family. You can find him at MichaelJohnSullivan.com for more information about the series.
