  Julie is slumped on the floor. The dog enters, goes to the dog bowl and eats. Kristina enters. She kneels and shakes Julie. She feels for her pulse. She stands and backs away slowly. She reaches for Julie’s phone. She dials. As she waits for an answer she takes the last one of Julie’s cigarettes. The lighter flares. Darkness.

  Polly Stenham’s plays include That Face (Royal Court and the Duke of York’s), for which she was awarded the 2008 Critics’ Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright, the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright 2007 and TMA Best New Play 2007; Tusk Tusk (Royal Court); No Quarter (Royal Court); and Hotel (National Theatre).

  August Strindberg (1849–1912) was a Swedish dramatist, novelist, poet and essayist. His other plays include The Father (1887), The Stronger (1890), Easter (1900), The Dance of Death (1900), A Dream Play (1902) and The Ghost Sonata (1907).
