Liam wasn’t finished yet. “What are you?” he asked. “Whose side are you on?”

His father smiled. “I’m a wild card,” he said. “There’s a network of us, working from the inside to bring down people like Willoughby. Sir Peter wanted our kind to break free, and I don’t have a problem with that. I do have a problem with how he set about it, though. People like that have to be stopped.”

They walked down through the trees, Liam, his father, Hayley and Luc.

They were heading for the creek, Liam realised. He glanced back at the school building, before it was lost in the trees. “At least it’s all over now,” he said softly.

“All over?” said his father. “You think NATS is it? I’ve been working against Willoughby for years, but there are others like him. Far too many of them...”

When they came to the creek, there was a sleek white yacht moored there.

Liam’s father stopped and faced the three friends. “It used to be Willoughby’s,” he said, gesturing towards the boat. “Now .... well, it’s been liberated.” He grinned, and continued, “I’ll take you wherever you like. Back to your family, if that’s what you choose. Hayley, where’s that? Somewhere down in Kent, isn’t it? And Luc – Guérande, isn’t it? I think it’s going to take some explaining, but we’ll be okay.”

  “And me?”

His father looked at Liam. “It’s like I told you. You have a choice. I can’t make these decisions for you.”

Liam nodded. He had plenty of time yet. All the time it would take to sail down to France to deliver Luc back to his parents.

Sometimes you just have to leap in, take the plunge. But sometimes it’s better to sit back and see how things turn out.
