Sanchez, Trevor: Previously a Recon Marine, currently assigned to Alpha Team as a medic, metahuman (telekinesis), code named Bones, hails from Dallas, Texas.
SAS: Special Air Service. A special forces unit of the British Army.
Secondment: A military term for the temporary transfer of a person from their main duty to another assignment. The term is used more in the UK than the US, but I liked it, so I used it.
SOCOM: United States Special Operations Command. Unified command that overseas all Special Operations command across all branches of the military.
Sons of Adam: Homegrown U.S. terrorist group with nativist tendencies who want to take back the country from the government. Occasionally fields metahumans in their fights against the U.S. government and targeted groups.
Splice: Toxic chemical within the story that has a 95 percent kill rate. Those with immunity to it get turned into metahumans.
Stirling, Ranisha (Rear Admiral Lower Half): Deputy director who supports the director in running the Metahuman Defense Force.
Strike Force: My made up alternate version of the very real Delta Force, a highly classified special forces operational unit.
Theater: In warfare, a theater is an area or place where military action is occurring. A theater can include land, air, and sea.
UMG: United Metahuman Guardians. The United Kingdom’s equivalent of the United States MDF within the story.
Wessex, Liam (Lt. Colonel): Youngest son to Prince Samuel, Earl of Wessex, thirteenth in line for the British throne, former Special Air Service, currently leading the Royal Legion, metahuman (electrokinesis), code named Knight, hails from London, England.
Williams, Donovan: Previously a Recon Marine, currently assigned to Alpha Team as a transport specialist, metahuman (enhanced spectrum eyesight), code named Tank, hails from Atlanta, Georgia.
Wolcott, Declan: Previously an Army Ranger, honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, past owner of North Star International (a private military company), current fugitive and terrorist.
Author’s Notes
This has been a wild and incredible journey, and I can’t thank everyone enough for joining me for it.
A gigantic thank you to Leslie Copeland, who I found while writing In the Ruins, and who has been in my corner ever since. Your beta skills are top-notch, but more than that, you’ve become a great friend.
To Bear, who continues to be incredibly generous with her time and skills. Thank you for letting me ramble to you for hours on end, text you at all hours of the day, and for being the first person to give me the push to start this journey with In the Wreckage.
To my alpha readers Kelly, Pilar, and May Archer. Thank you all so much for slogging through this story in pieces. A huge thank you to May in particular who helped spot the problems before I got too far ahead of myself.
Thank you to Courtney Bassett for proofreading and to Jersey Devil Editing for the edit. This was a beast of a book to get through, and you both did amazing jobs.
Last but not least, thank you to the readers. All of you who took a chance on this series helped make it what it is today, and for that I will be forever grateful. Your support means everything to me as a writer, and I wouldn’t be here without you.
Again, I have never been active military, so if I got any of the terms and actions wrong, my apologies. I tried to extrapolate as best I could when accounting for the story theme and its timeframe in the future. I also know nothing about the CIA, spies, and espionage. I’m winging it and making stuff up as I go along, but hopefully my winging it makes sense.
I would be thrilled and grateful if you would consider reviewing In the Requiem on Amazon or Goodreads. I appreciate all honest reviews, positive or negative. Reviews definitely help my books get seen, so thank you!
