Shadow War Page 4

Life on campus was always stressful with a tough regime imposed on students by the academic staffs to work hard and play less therefore you’re either among the upper echelon and remain there or the mediocre and become castaway. Soon it come as no small measure to Eugene who became eager to fit into the small elite academician clique in a bid to improve on his below average performance which threatens his continuation. He was a tough ruggedly looking handsome dude with killer swags that got the ladies swooning all over, nevertheless a total douchebag. From his first year he’d been more than a thorn on Ibrahim flesh, instigating various assaults and abuses on his person. When it got so severe that ibrahim considered quiting entirely, he reported the situation to an uncle who happened to be a senior lecturer in his department, whom in turn took it up with the school secuirity council and anti-cultist unit. These steps proved effective in mitigating futher physical abuse but had no effect on verbal insults and threats.

Eventually things finally came to a halt during the end of the previous session just before the second semester examination when the class was divided into ten group comprising of eight members each and given topics to research, develop and defend. Quite unexpectedly he and Eugene were the only boys in their group and as expected he was a nitwit and latent member who rarely had anything meaningful to contribute and so the group carried on without him most times. There was a rumor that Mr Abiodun had convinced the head of department that the defence should be conducted on individual basis instead as a group. As the details of their discussion trickle to the hearing of the students, it startled everyone especially the sleep walkers those that had intended hiding behind the shadow of the A-listers. This is a test of individual academic strength the source had overhead Mr Abiodun saying with the intention of flushing out anyone with a GPA less than 2.0, insisting the population was much. This was in conjunction with the ongoing news making the rounds that the polytechnic was being queried by the national universal commission for over admission and overcrowding of students within limited facilities for learning and perhaps have instructed them to depopulate.

Eugene turned a new leaf upon these hearsays, always present for group meetings albeit late but never absent. He tried catching up but they had gone too far already that when the day came for the defense, he was so anxious he knew he will make a total fool of himself before the panel. Because of time factor and conflicting schedules it was agreed among members of the panel comprising of the HOD and three senior lecturers which includes Mr Abiodun, Mr Abubakar Ibrahim’s aggrieved uncle and a female lecturer to allow the students defend in groups rather than individually. Upon hearing this, the student was elated and relived but Eugene was still troubled by the presence of Mr Abubakar who was the uncle to Ibrahim a boy he once despise but has since learn to appreciate and respect during the period of the project. He’d learned a lot during the short time they’d spent together and really got to admire this astute sense and visionary personality. When it came to their turn, they went in and stood before the panel. Ten minutes later it was over and gosh he felt a weight the size of Aso rock mounted on his shoulders. As expected Mr Abubakar had pounced the instant he set gaze on him, grilling him with question after question. What made it worse was the way he sham, humiliated and eviscerated him with choice words in the presences of everyone especially the ladies anytime he failed to answer a question correctly. The other lecturers’ ascquised as he was being ridiculed, while his colleagues stared on in pity. During the ordeal he stole several askance glances at Ibrahim who really stood up for him, answering most questions even when they weren’t directed at him even surreptitiously whispering him some answers. The ten minutes spent in there seemed like an eternity in emotional, mental and intellectual quagmire. When it was all over he thought to himself as he shrugged into one of the lecture halls how surprise he will be if he get a pass. As he landed heavily on the chair his thought pondered on what a huge disappointment he was to his poor grandmother if he were to be expelled. He was still alone with his thought oblivious of Ibrahim presence.

I spoke with my uncle a while ago when they went on recess, you have noting to worry about,’ he said reassuringly

I don’t need you or anyone’s help,’ he retorted,’ just get the hell out of my sight and let me be.

Ibrahim shuddered stood up quietly and left. The next day results were posted on the notice board, Eugene heard and quite reluctantly went to check his score. As usual Ibrahim lead the way however he was stupefied to see a grade C to his credit after such a horrific performance the previous day. He knew there’s only one person to thank and that was Ibrahim, so he went in search of him. He inquired of his whereabout from a couple friends but they all seems not know where he was. He then went in search of him behind the building block where most restaurant and business café were situated, still no sign. He gave up deciding to meet with up with some friends at the boys hostel block situated at the far south of the premises, a good twenty minutes walk from where he was presently. As he was about making a u-turn he heard voices coming from behind one of the unused stores. Tentantively he went to take a sneak peek. There Ibrahim was being shoved roughly around by a couple of guys who were friends of his. He was drench and slippery as they yell abuses and slapped him about violently. Then he was ordered to sit on the bare floor, the snack and soft drink he’d went to purchase was being munched by one of them hungry fellows while another mixed more detergent with water, the third guy hovered around him with a leather belt in his hand threatening to finish it on his naked flesh as he sat shivering, his eyes tight shut in pain from the soapy water poured on him.

Eugene steathly advanced forward, choosing a vantange spot behind a pile of block surrounded by plaintain trees to observe. The second dude finished his mixture and carried the bucket to where Ibrahim was seated. He scooped the water with a small bowl and splashed it on him. Ibrahim shriveled in pain as the one with the belt flogged him simultaneously. The last guy having finished eating came forward and butted him on the side which sent him reeling on the floor in excruciating pain. His pleas fell on daft ears as the ordeal continued for about five more minutes. When one of them brought out a short locally crafted dagger and approached Ibrahim limp frame on the floor, Eugene sprinted forward with lightning speed towards the dude as he raised it up to strike, wrangling it off his grip and with his feet cleared him off the floor. He landed heavily, screaming in pain quite sure a bone or two was broken. The others made to pounce but retracted upon seeing it was their guy.

Dude, why did you do that? Screamed the guy with the belt,’Are you crazy?

I should be the one asking you trio. How dare you—,’I reiterate, ‘how dare you? Do you guys want to get me expelled? His voice enraged, ‘or have you already forgotten I signed an undertaken that should any harm befall him, I will be held responsible.

But you were the one lamenting he was the reason for your poor performance in yesterday’s project defense and that you don’t mind strangling him with your bare hands,’ the guy rejoined. Eugene I think my wrist is broken, help me up,’ the guy on the floor pleaded.

Eugene didn’t respond rather he went over to Ibrahim to render his assistance.

I don’t understand how you can hit a brother because of this motherfucker,’ he continued grittingly between clench teeth as he struggled to his feet with the help of his friends. Eugene assisted Ibrahim to his feet, helping him with his clothes and shoes.

I don’t think you can walk properly on your own so follow my lead,’he said taking ibrahim’s arm and placing it across his shoulder before wrapping his around his for better support.

I hope you are comfortable this way? he asked to which he nodded faintly. Then let’s be gone.

Hold on Eugene,’ one the guys interrupted,’ are you really saving this fairy. Men this dude is fake, we are bros and we stick together.

Not anymore, I’m no longer ready to live my life associating with scums. My grandmother trained me better than that and from this moment on
my friendship with you lowlives is over.

Listen to yourself speak, soon you will stink of his stench.

  That shouldn’t be your headache.

Now I know you’re high on crap or something worse. What better way to live one’s life other than this. We are at the top of the food chain. Everyone wants to be us. We make the rules not follow them.

Count me out of your ivy league. Yesterday night while laying on my bed I had an epiphany and realized that it is actually people like us, me and you that are the virus plaguing the earth,’Eugene began disdainfully. Well I’ve chosen to be a virus no more rather a vaccine, a cure. Life is too short and I hope to make meaning out of mine,’he adjusted his grip more firmly around Ibrahim so that he wouldn’t trip as they scuttle away.

Lastly,’ he said turning around,’ never you guys lay your filthy hands on him ever again or you will have me to contend with and you know what I’m capable of,’ he smirked. Go find someone else to be your bitch, assholes.

With those words came the end of every form of abuse on Ibrahim person and the dawn of a new bond. Their friendship helped Eugene turn a new leaf, taking his academic more seriously though he still indulges in other extracurricular activities with his former pals nevertheless on the down low. Amongst Ibrahim’s numerous female acquaintances were two very pretty ladies, which had the attention of almost any guy on campus. Nneka and Amina were his closest friends and were always in the company of each other. Eugene soon made his intention known to Ibrahim, about his feelings for Amina. On his own he’d made several attempt to approach her and start a meaningful conversation but it always fell flat midway forcing him to plead with Ibrahim for assistance. Though Ibrahim wasn’t comfortable with the idea at first, he reluctantly obliged by subtly requestting Eugene presence whenever there were together. Blessed with savvy goodlooks and charisma, his conquests were legendary. The ladies drool over themselves vying for his attention even when they knew he is a playboy and they were nothing more than mere objects of satisfaction. He also knows how to crack good jokes making the ladies laugh combined, with Ibrahim tender persuasion Nneka and Amina soon loosen up to his presence.

Ibrahim waltz to their table and sat down.

Excuse me he signaled to the attendant,’please I’ll have what they’re having. Now babe’s what the fuss about, has someone gotten laid? He asked eyeing the both of them mischieviously.

Hey stop it,’Nneka retorted,’stop messing around,’ Hurry Amina, spill it out. What is going on?

Yesterday I allowed Eugene go third base,’ she exhaled gaspingly.

Is that it? Ibrahim asked blandly and was about saying something nutty but felt a kick on his ankle; he turned at Nneka who signaled for him to chill.

Oh my god,’ exclaimed Nneka excitedly. How was it?

It was pure bliss, simply amazing,’she said with arms wrapped across as if she was still in his presence. Infact I could barely constrain myself that it took my entire will power for him not to go all the way. But I doubt it will be possible next time,’she purrs

Ehen! Then I’m duly obligated to make sure you silly kids are never left alone for a while. He has to work a little more harder for the honey,’ Nneka quipped.

Ibrahim burst into a hearty laughter.

You ladies better stop kidding yourself. It’s been what -—like five months now you guys have been dating?

  Continue buzz killer,’hissed Nneka

So enough with the mind games already, it’s becoming tiring. This is campus for godsakes not secondary school and you are big girls now, go with the flow. Trust me if he aint getting it from you soon, he’ll get it somewhere else.

Are you implying I’m not adequate for him?

Not at all, to put it succinctly Eugene is a good guy and he truly loves you so why don’t you sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Stop putting so much thought into it.

Enjoy which useless ride? Nneka yelp. Sometimes you amaze me

It’s not like I don’t love him enough to let him in rather I’m scared. I heard the first time is painful and the sight of blood disgust me. Also I don’t want to end up alone emotionally bruised.

I doubt he’ll leave you hurt and for the experience, it is a simple biological process all girls must undergo to become a woman. Eugene is aware of your virginity; he’ll go easy on you.

Aha this is what I’m talking about, I want mine to be with that special person I hope to get married to. The relationship has to last forever not just some random hookup.

This is the twenty first century girl, stop being naïve like my grandmother from the fifties. Loosen up and enjoy the moment is all I’m saying, what will be will be.

Pay him no attention,’ Nneka started coming to her defence. If he can’t wait until you’re ready then he isn’t worthy of you.Like you’ve said earlier, this is modern times and a woman’s decision has to respected. We are more than pleasures tools for men satisfaction.

Sweet coming from Nneka with her right wing feminist ideology,’he rolled his eyes severally at her,’ but don’t you girls ever forget it’s still a man’s world no matter how progressive the society we live in today. And why hasn’t my order arrived yet? Excuse me ladies,’he stood up to go over to the counter.

I’m so confused Nneka what if Ibrahim is right? I don’t want to loose him because I have fallen for him and it’s overwhelming.

Oh dear, I was in this same situation several years ago and was heartbroken when he finaly went away. The experience was quite painful, one I wouldn’t wish for anyone, ‘she shook her head in mild recollection. But I ain’t implying yours will end up like mine. My advice, follow your heart but I promise to be right beside you should it go south.

Thanks dear,’Amina heaved in relieve, leaning forward for an embrace. Nneka hugged her tightly muttering I got you babe in her ears.

Women in solidarity aww,’ exclaimed Ibrahim hilariously holding his lunch. I really need some of those support,’he scooped down yanking both of them closer for a huge embrace. The ladies burst into laughter as a result of his actics, being with Ibrahim is pure joy, there’s never a dull moment.

You silly silly boy,’Amina pinched his nose after they disengaged.

And quite mischievious too,’ Nneka added.

Say what you may but I speak the truth,’he said taking his seat. Now over to you Nneka, I saw the look just before the quiz, blurt it out.

Still on relationship matters o,’she said drearily

With whom? Oh shush, I guess it’s concerning that Aliyu your Moslem love interest. No, no, no,’he wagged a finger at her shaking his head. He’s betrothed to someone else -—water under the bridge, forget him.

I know, but of late even as recent as this morning he keeps telling me how much he needs me in his life. He told me at the park on my way here that he is in love with me.

And what was your reply,’ they both asked simultaneously

Nothing I was confused. I just hopped into the next available cab.

Aww! He must felt the impact,’Amina pointed.

Yeah he must have, but you did well. Some territories are better left unexplored, don’t want dissension arising,’Ibrahim said with a nod. But what is on your mind?

The question jilted Nneka back to conciouseness who was already momentarily lost in thoughts. She took a deep breath saying,’

Frankly I’ve got feelings for him, he’s a good person and i...uh.. I love him too, that is the problem.

And what do you intend to do about it? Queried Amina

Well, after intense delibration within me, I’ve decided to follow my heart.

You can’t be serious babe, needn’t I remind you he’s engaged, read my lips -—to be married off to someone else whom I believe is a friend of yours.

Actually Aisha and i ain’t that close and engagements can be called off. No one should be forced into marriage for whatever sentiments. To me it’s crude and barbaric.

Your pigheaded attitude can be foolhardy I must say.

Yeah, say and think whatever I don’t care. He loves me and I do feel same for him. Let the future decide our fate.

I can’t deal,’Ibrahim gesture with his hands surrendering. Excuse me while I go take a leak,’he said scurrying to his feet for the conveinence. He soon rushed back in less than a minute panting.

While we are here busy discussing and planning our love life, our academics have since taking the high road, Mr Abiodun lecture has started.

They scrambled out out of their seats for the lecture hall. Upon getting there the entire class was seated quietly listening and jotting down. Mr Abiodun stood at the helm of the hall a file opened infront of him from which he dictated, turning occasionally away from it to make inscriptions on the board for further clarification. No one dares enter his lecture midway because he will certainly ask that person out. In the past when some stubborn students had refused to leave, he’d cancelled the lecture marking the entire class absent and that is when the real trouble begins. Attendance to his lecture is mandatory as it attract extra points to be present. Most students failed the course that semester and since then everyone makes an effort to be prompt.

We’ll have to dodge inside when his attention is fixed on the board,’ Ibrahim whispered to the others

The hall has two entrance doors, each at both end of the hall. They choose the rear end which is much easier to sneak through without being caught.

But how come no one called to alert us of his coming, not even your sexy heartthrob Eugene,’he mumbled.
