Zelag made a face. “Hell no. Last thing I want is them hacking my arm.”
“I wonder what the TA will think when they finally show up on Sfodria,” Pitt mused. “They got scooped by Rhysalan. I talked with one of their marines for a bit. They’d been out for weeks on patrol when they intercepted our transmission.”
“Good thing they did,” Zelag said. “But I’ll bet we haven’t seen the last of all this.”
“What do you mean?” Pitt said. “You think the Unity will come after WDI?”
“No, they don’t care about us,” Zelag said. “But you saw what a platoon of them could do to a moderately advanced society. Those knights were the planetary apex predators for centuries and they got put down fast and hard. What if they’d gotten into our augments? What if they hacked our HQ on Kantillon? Total chaos would ensue. It’s no wonder the Rhyslani have a hard on for those freaks. For all that Admiral’s arrogance, they didn’t sent him to snake half our contract. They sent him because they know the gig is up for humanity if the posthumans can just get a foothold somewhere.”
“The Unity have their own worlds,” Pitt said with a shrug. “They haven’t seriously ventured out of them in centuries.”
“They just did,” Zelag said. “And they just about took a whole damned planet with what, thirteen guys?”
“Good point,” I said. “But it was just a small backwater planet, nothing like Rhysalan or one of the Ascendancy’s worlds.”
“That’s how you do a test,” Zelag said. “If I were them, I’d say it was a big success. If they’re at all logical, which I’m sure they are, with their computer brains and hivemind and all, then they probably learned a lot from that little foray.”
“So what do you think that means?” I asked him.
He stared off into the distance for a moment, saying nothing.
“Come on,” Pitt said. “What does it mean?”
“War,” Zelag told us. “Interstellar war.”
