  “Way too many ‘ifs’ for my taste,” I muttered. “But you’re right. I—or you—we could die tomorrow, and if we do, then we’ll never know. Leila will never know.”

  “Know what?” he asked.

  “The answer to her question. This.” I reached out, pulled Will’s face down to mine, and kissed him—hard—right on the lips.

  Soft fur brushed my ankles. “Mer-OW-OW-OW,” Toby said.

  I hardly heard him. Because Will was kissing me back.
