Dragons: one of the Folk of Mithgar. Made up of two strains: Fire-drakes and Cold-drakes. Dragons are mighty creatures capable of speech. They are incredibly strong. Most have wings and the powers of flight. Their inner and outer eyes are one and the same, hence they see in total blackness, and perceive the hidden, the unseen, and the invisible. They are not deceived by illusions. They can cast forth their senses and detect creatures and Folk within their domain. They dream in an etheric state. Generally they live in remote caves and ravage the nearby land. They sleep for one thousand years and remain active for two thousand. Often they seek treasure, which they hoard. Fire-drakes spew flame. Cold-drakes spew acid and poisonous vapors. There are no female Dragons; Dragons mate with Krakens. Dragons named in The Commentaries are Black Kalgalath, Daagor, Ebonskaith, Redclaw, Skail, Silverscale, and Sleeth the Orm. Also known as Drakes, Orms, and Wyrms.

(the) Dragon’s Roost: the name of a headland in the Gronfang Mountains overlooking the Great Maelstrom, where it is said that Dragons gather in the time of the mating with the Krakens.

Dragonship: a long boat made of overlapping planks of wood. Sail- and oar-powered, their flexible hulls allowed them to cut through the water at speeds unrivalled in the time of this tale. The flexibility of the hull allowed them to maneuver in turns beyond the capability of their narrow keelboards alone. Elyn: a Woman of Jord. Daughter of Aranor and Alania. Twin sister to Elgo. Princess. Thork’s companion on the Quest of Black Mountain. Slayer of Andrak. Slain by Black Kalgalath. Also known as “the one to hide.”
Estor: a Man of Pellar. A bard. Composer of the Lay of Elgo, Sleeth’s Doom, as well as many other pieces, as noted in Commentaries on the Lays of Bard Estor, an anonymous work.
eventide: generally taken to mean the march of dusk, from its onset until full dark, although it can also mean all of the time between sunset and sunrise.

Gron: Modru’s evil Realm. Barren and bleak, it is a great wedge of land between the Gronfang Mountains to the east and the Rigga Mountains to the west, bordered on the north by the Boreal Sea.

Hèlsteed: a horse-like creature, with cloven hooves, a long scaled tail, yellow eyes with slitted pupils, and a foetid stench. Not as fast as a horse, but possessed of much greater endurance.
High Eagles: one of the fabled eld creatures. Said to have the power of speech.
