“My daughter,” my mother said, her voice quivering slightly. “I hate that I have to send you off again to protect you. I wish that I could defend you from the universe.”

“It’s only temporary,” I told her. “I will be back before the vote.”

She stepped forward and pulled me into her arms. “You are such a brave woman. I just pray that you are well watched over.”

“I pray that you are too.” Even though I wasn’t religious, it was easier to hope that there was a higher being who could take care of my family.

My mother stepped back and looked at Aaronmon. She gave him a tight squeeze on his shoulder before walking away to give us some privacy.

“I guess our ceremony will be later rather than sooner, huh?” Aaronmon said with a sad smile. He reached for my hand and pulled it to his lips. My heart dropped, and tears dampened my cheeks.

“Aaronmon, I can’t leave you. Not like this,” I said shakily.

He lifted his hand up to my cheek and swept them away. “I would join you, but you know I need to stay.”

I nodded and tore my eyes away from his. I knew there wasn’t an easy choice, and there was no one I trusted more to protect my mother than him.

I bit my lip and stopped crying. “I need to tell you something before I leave.” I brought my eyes back to his. “I need you to know that I love you. I really, truly love you.”

His eyes subtly hinted at realization. He stepped closer to me and cupped his palms on the line of my jaw, pulling me closer to his mouth, giving me no time to take a breath. His strong lips glided against mine. His warm touch shielded me from the cool gusts of wind. My heart hammered loudly in my chest. His mouth tasted like sweet honey. I grasped every sense with my mind to preserve this moment forever. He pulled away slowly, catching my bottom lip between his. It took a moment to get used to the harsh and jarring distance between us. A single drop of rain fell, catching my cheek. “I love you, too,” he said, unwrapping his arms from around me.

He went back toward the onmore with my mother, not even looking back. The mist of rain picked up, obscuring my view of him. The elevator buzzed, starting to move up into the ship. When I entered, I didn’t speak to anyone and headed straight to my room. I had never thought I would be back on the spaceship that brought me to Emréiana—at least not so soon. It had been as if there was no home for me in the universe.

Turbulence broke me from my memories. There seemed to be a lot of debris where we were heading as it had been this way for the past day. I placed my abula on its charging pad and left up the hologram of Aaronmon as a constant reminder of whom I would return to. It’s only for a short time.

My door chimed. I rolled off the bed quickly and answered it. “Carson,” Kyle said. “We are about to reach Morgon.”

I nodded and let him into my room. “How long till we arrive?” I realized that my new life would begin soon. The man I thought would be a memory reached for my hand, giving me comfort.

“The pilot said an hour, but I wanted to come and prepare you myself. Morgon is different from other planets.” He paused and looked at me uncertainly. “I hope that you won’t be uncomfortable around me.”

While my feelings for Kyle were still unclear, I was relieved to have someone familiar with me. I did not even know for sure that the planet Morgon would welcome my presence, but it was a risk I would take in order to protect everything and everyone I loved on Earth and Emréiana. I looked back toward the hologram of Aaronmon, reassuring myself that this was the best way. It’s only for a short time.
