Save the Child Page 20

by Jimmy Craig Porter

  “I don’t know. I don’t have a watch on.”

  “Joe, what time is it?”

Joe raised his sleeve. Jane Worthy looked at the watch. John also looked at the watch. “That looks just like the watch we had bought for Jeff.”

“It is, Mrs. Worthy,” Rick said.

  “I don’t understand.”

  “Joe, you’re under arrest!”

“Why are you arresting my son? He’s a hero.”

“Be quiet, Mother. They know more about me than you ever did. And they have spent more time with me than you ever did.”

  “Did you kill your grandmother?”

“Hell, yes, and both men at the liquor store, and the Worthy’s son.”

  “But why your own grandmother?”

“You left me in the hands of abusive pedophiles. It was just a matter of time and you would have been next.”

Mrs. Worthy, for the first time in her life, was at a loss for words. She just shrank up inside.

Rick stepped in. “Don’t do it, John. We’ll take care of it.”

  “But he killed my son!”

“This is no way to handle it.”

“Rick is right, John,” Ginger said. “Let Rick take care of everything. That’s the way Jeff would have wanted it.”

John Worthy broke down, gave the shotgun to Ginger, went inside, and collapsed into a chair, sobbing and shaking his head. Ginger stayed close behind. John Worthy was his friend. Rick called Shadow for backup. Dave was just outside.

Joe looked at Jane Worthy and his mother. “It’s ironic, isn’t it?”

  They both looked at him.

“If l had been aborted, Jeff Worthy would still be alive. Gives you something to think about, doesn’t it? Save the Child.”

  CHAPTER 41

  (Two Months Later)

Pam walked into Ginger’s place. She needed extra money. She went through the back door and was greeted warmly by Drummer and Dot, who were playing with Rocky, the pup. Pam walked from the kitchen to the bar. Ginger and Rick were at the bar and both smiled and gave a warm hello. She returned their smiles and prepared for work. She felt a movement inside her…
