“Thirty-five percent. I want it on paper.”
“Riley-”
“If I don’t have a signed and notarized copy in my hand before the date you’re supposed to meet, I’ll call her and tell her to refuse you. She can do that, you know.”
A long pause stretched out between them, then he groaned good naturedly. “Has anyone ever told you that you drive a hard bargain?”
“Yes. And you need to watch the clichés if you’re going to write a halfway decent account of what happened to us at the convention.”
“You do your thing. I’ll do mine.”
“I want those papers, Nick.”
“Alright, Riley. You want them. You’ll get them.”
The pause between them then was companionable, almost friendly, and Riley hated to break it, but she knew she had to. She sucked in a breath. “Any news on Veronica?”
“They haven’t found her body yet, but there are a lot of people still missing from the storm. Hundreds, they said on the news, and that’s an estimate. They’ll find her. It’s not like she swam away.”
The tight feeling in Riley’s gut didn’t agree. She said her goodbyes, put her phone on the seat beside her, and hooked up the auxiliary cord. She turned on the podcast playlist she had listened to on the way there, then leaned over to reach into the glove compartment.
She put her hand on the gun there, let out a long breath, then closed it again. Until they found Veronica’s body, she felt safer knowing she had something to rely on.
Better safe than sorry.
