“You have an uncanny connection to that sleigh,” he said, pulling on his boots. “OK, I’m ready. And what’s this special delivery?”
“You’ll see,” she said, and bent down for her elf shoes. “Oh, I forgot about this.” She picked up the unopened gift from Mrs. Claus.
“Shall we open it now?” he asked.
“No. Dash and Dan are here.” She’d felt them before they came into view, and as the sleigh slowed, she leaped into it, with Bas close behind her.
“Hi, fellas,” Bas called. “Merry Christmas.”
The two reindeer jostled and danced, and then flew off before Bas was sitting down. It was their new game. Ever since Bas had got over his vertigo, they seemed determined to make it come back, or maybe they were trying to kill him. Pepper was still trying to iron out the details of how she was going to commute. But if Bas was spattered all over the ground below, Dan and Dash would not have to give up their beloved Miss Pepper.
“So where are we going?” Bas asked.
“Can’t you guess?” she asked.
“No.”
“Santa thought we should go and pay Krampus a visit, I have a new pouch of Christmas Magic for him, since he was so generous with the last one, when we needed it.”
“I’m sure Callie and the rest of the people in Eastside Terrace are thankful.”
“It’s a pity they’ll never know what he did for them.”
“We also have to take his basket back to him, he left in the sleigh that day,” Pepper said, and began laughing.
“What’s so funny?” Bas asked.
“Santa decided to have a little joke all of his own on Krampus.”
“Which is?”
“Wait and see!”
The sleigh flew fast and true, the reindeer still had the remnants of Santa’s special Christmas Eve magic over them. So it wasn’t long before they were cruising over the Alps, and then descending out of the sky, to land, unseen, by the small cave. Where Krampus was waiting for them.
“I could smell that Christmas Magic on the air,” Krampus said.
“Merry Christmas, you old goat,” Dan said, shifting into his human form, as soon as Pepper had unharnessed him.
Krampus laughed and hugged Dan. “Good to see you again, my deer.”
“These jokes are worse than those in Christmas crackers,” Dash said.
“We have something for you,” Pepper said, handing over the small pouch. “Santa wanted you to have this. And to let you know about the good you did that night.”
“Pfft. Good, all I did was sprinkle the dust. Good is in the heart of the receiver.”
“Then Callie’s family must be very good,” Bas said. “Her mom bought a lottery ticket.”
“I’m guessing it won, or this would be a pointless story,” Krampus said gruffly.
“It did, and they decided to buy their building, so no one had to leave Eastside Terrace. You changed a lot of lives that day.”
“Well, I won’t go making a habit of it, and don’t think I won’t go filling my basket up with kids next year if Santa doesn’t hold up his end of the bargain.”
“He will,” Pepper said, and started chuckling to herself again.
It was infectious, and soon Dan and Dash were laughing too.
“OK, so what’s the joke?” Krampus asked.
“I’d like to know the same thing,” Bas said.
“Santa sent you a special gift, since you left your basket in the sleigh.”
“Which is?” Krampus asked suspiciously.
“He decided to help you out, and filled it with kids for you.”
Krampus looked shocked, until a bleat escaped from the basket in the sleigh. “He didn’t.”
“He did,” Pepper said. “He decided you deserved a kid or two, or even three.”
Dan and Dash hauled the basket out of the sleigh, and set it down on its side. Out popped three small goats. “Santa thought you might like some company when you roam over the Alps.”
The three small goats leaped around, their legs seeming to go in all directions at once.
“You’ll look after them, won’t you?” Pepper asked, suddenly scared the three kids wouldn’t be wanted.
Krampus knelt down on the ground, and the three kids scampered up to him. “Of course, I will,” Krampus said, his voice thick with emotion. “They’re like me, only without the ugly face.” The goats came up and licked him, before jumping away and offering him a game of chase.
“Come on, let’s run with them,” Dan said, with Dash hot on his heels.
“I never thought I’d see Krampus cry,” Bas said.
“Maybe he’s never had something to love before,” Pepper said. “We take it for granted. Our moms and dads, brothers and sisters, friends and mates.” She lay her head on his chest.
“You’re right,” he said. “It makes me think of my own family. As soon as things calm down, let’s go and see them.”
“Sure. Have you told them you are marrying a Christmas Elf?”
He laughed. “I did.”
“What did they say?” she asked.
“Nothing. To be honest my mom is so happy I have you, she wouldn’t care what you did. And my dad is trying to see what angle he can work. I’m sure he’ll try to talk you into persuading me to go and work for him.”
“That is between you and him.”
“I like my life the way it is.” He kissed the top of her head, as they watched the three goats and the three men, go around and around in circles. “Simple pleasures.”
“Are often the bet things in life.” Her hand closed around the gift in her pocket. She pulled it out. “Shall we open it now?”
“Sure,” Bas said.
Pepper carefully unwrapped the paper, tucking it back into her pocket, and handing the box she had revealed to Bas. “Here. You open it.”
He took it from her and pulled the flap of the box. Inside was a key, a pouch of Christmas Magic and a note from Mrs. Claus. “I got an upgrade on a sleigh. This one doesn’t need a reindeer, but it does run on Christmas Magic. Happy Holidays!”
She hugged him. “I was worried how I was going to get backwards and forwards between your place and the North Pole. Now I have the answer. I couldn’t figure out how I was going to get one of the reindeer to fly me back and forth.”
“Does Mrs. Claus always know what people need?” Bas asked.
“I think she just might,” Pepper said. “I think she just might.”
“She knew. Didn’t she?” Bas asked. “When she sent you out to visit Krampus. She knew you would fall into my arms.”
She chuckled, it was much more romantic than saying she’d run into him with the sleigh. “I have my suspicions. She’d call it a woman’s intuition.” Pepper put her arms around his neck, and kissed his lips. “You wouldn’t expect Mrs. Claus to not have some magic of her own, would you?”
He laughed. “I would never have thought, I’d be standing here having a conversation about Christmas Magic, on Christmas Day, with my mate.” He looked out across the snowy wonderland all around them. “I never believed in any of it. But I do now. So, no, I wouldn’t expect Mrs. Claus not to have magic, because right now, I believe there is magic in all of us.”
“I think you may be right, Barnabas Bear. I think you may be right.” She kissed him. “Oh, Candy Canes.”
