Colonial Offer (The Sampson Series Book 1) Page 17

“Say what?” Jackie’s voice was perking up. “The first to know what?”

Sarah laughed. “I can’t even say it out loud. You’ll need to see it to believe it.” Even a half-asleep Jackie would hear the joy in her voice.

“All right…” She replied, her curiosity piqued. The video chat connected and Jackie’s face came on the screen, the tight curls of her hair still mussed from sleep. Sarah could see the suspicion in her eyes. “What’s going on?”

Sarah didn’t say anything. She leaned close to Scott and then held her left hand in front of the camera, showing off the ring.

Jackie screeched and jumped off the bed. “No! No way!” She yelled. Her face disappeared from the screen and all they could see was the bedroom, the image bouncing between the floor and ceiling.

Sarah turned to Scott and laughed. “She’s literally jumping up and down, I think.”

“I think you might be right,” he replied. “Is she excited or scared for you? Do I need to fear for my safety?”

Before Sarah had a chance to reply, Jackie’s face came back on screen. “You’re getting married. Girl, I’m so happy for you. This is so awesome.” She grinned from ear to ear. “You finally have a man of your own. I’m so happy I could cry.”

Sarah turned to Scott. “Looks like you’re safe.”

Tongue in cheek, he said, “Well, that’s good to know.”

“You two go have some fun,” Jackie told them, “I have a wedding to plan.” Without another word, she ended the video chat.

Sarah put the phone down and relaxed into Scotts arms. “And now we chill while Hurricane Jackie takes care of everything.” She sighed, content.

Pulling her attention back to him, Scott held the keychain up. “Don’t forget this.”

Sarah accepted it and held it in her open palm. With wonder-filled eyes, she looked around her new home. Sarah remembered the fantasy she’d had at the beach and was astounded by this sudden change in her life. She had almost everything she’d ever dreamed of. The only thing missing was a little blonde in a bathing suit of pink ruffles. Sarah snuck a sideways glance at Scott. Would now be too soon? Well, Sarah knew they’d gambled at least twice. They had plenty of time for children—the rest of their lives, actually—but if it happened now, she would be more than okay with it. And she knew, deep in her soul, that he would be, too.

Closing her hand around the keychain, she locked eyes with him. Shaking her head gently, she whispered, “I can’t believe you chose me.”

An eyebrow rose in question. “Why wouldn’t I choose you?”

She shrugged. “Because I’m plai—” She never got the chance to finish the sentence.

“Don’t. Don’t say it.” The arm around her shoulders pulled her in a little tighter and his gaze became intense. “You are not plain, Sarah. Not even close.” His eyes roamed over her. “Your hair is silk.” He ran a hand through it. “Your eyes are a gorgeous brown that reminds me of the richest chocolate.” With his free hand, Scott caressed the side of her face. “Your lips were made for kissing.” He emphasized this point by brushing them with his own. “Your body is luscious.” Scott pulled her closer and ran his hand down her back to grab her butt. “You, my dear Sarah, are an exotic siren that has put me under a spell.”

Old beliefs were difficult to forget. “Exotic siren?” Sarah said, her voice hesitant with doubt. But his eyes narrowed as he urged her to believe him. If he said she was a siren, who was she to argue? “I like it.” She leaned back a little, an idea forming. “Did you say a spell?”

  He grunted.

“If you’re under my spell, then you have to do as I say, yes?” The side of her lips rose as she formed a plan.

“How much trouble am I in?” Scott asked, giving her a sideways glance.

Sarah stood and placed the keychain by her phone. Turning she said, “Mr. Sampson, you need to follow me.” He didn’t comment, just obeyed. When she saw him stand, she began to walk to the stairs, all the while beckoning him with a sashay of her hips and a wicked smile of promise. “That’s it, follow me,” she encouraged him.

Up the stairs and down the hallway they went. Once they reached their bedroom, Sarah made him do all kinds of things to her, things that made them both smile, things they’d remember until they were old and gray. By the time exhaustion claimed them, the sun was rising. She cherished the weight of Scott’s arm around her, snuggled her body against his, and closed her eyes in perfect bliss. The last thought running through her mind before she drifted to sleep was that this was a wonderful way to start their life together. Even the dragon was quiet.
